The emotional and mental problems we experience are the result of relational patterns developed early in life. These relational patterns were effective at first, however as life changed, relational patterns often do not, and so they are no longer effective. Relational patterns resist change because they have been used for many years and for the most part are unconscious to us. We feel as if we are making conscious choices about how to relate to others and respond to events, but in reality we are reenacting old ways of relating.
In therapy, we discover together how you deal with relationships. At we will talk about how and why relational patterns developed, you and I will begin to experience your relational patterns in the therapy session. As that happens you find yourself experiencing real and intense emotions. Experiencing those emotions is an important part change.
Therapy is a safe place where you experience emotions and explore new ways to respond. The goal is not to shame but to discover. We go through this discovery process together. Therapy is not me figuring you out or fixing you. Therapy is a process we walk through as you discover new ways of responding to your world.
