My clients often believe they are a burden to others. They think they need to be perfect to be loved and that it would overwhelm others to know how they really feel. These beliefs leave them feeling anxious, lonely, ashamed and unhappy. They often isolate and use pornography, video games or substances to numb themselves. They may seek advice online, but find this information unhelpful. They may beat themselves up in frustration. Often, they seek therapy to have: better relationships; security and trust to express their needs; greater motivation and a sense of control over their life; and the confidence to be their authentic selves.

I've been in practice 25 yrs - with individuals/couples & families -- kids 6+, many teens, college students & adults. I'm shamelessly informal -- no ties or pressed shirts here!. The office is quite unique - - very large, ultra comfy, w/MANY natural oddities... slightly chaotic -- like life! Good strong coffee/tea/soda & munchies always available. Pets welcome. I'm adopted myself, a licensed foster parent, & work with trauma and attachment. I have a multi-cultural family & lived abroad (Africa). I do co-parenting therapy & am also very familiar w/court systems, working with Dr.'s, lawyers, schools and custody issues.

I believe that everyone has a purpose and a story. We are all also connected to each other by our stories. I work with couples that are struggling in their partnerships and need help with reconnection or conflict mediation. I work with families that desire for stronger connection. Whether it’s a loss you’ve experienced and need someone to help you process it, or a child struggling in school, I want to help you with those and everything in between. I work with individuals as well. Depression, anxiety, and life transitions are difficult to process on your own and are emotions or circumstances almost everyone can relate to.

I offer teletherapy and in-office therapy to clients of all gender identities, sexual orientations racial and ethnic identities. With 25 years of clinical experience, I provide a safe and confidential space to explore what needs healing. Trained in trauma EMDR /Polyvalgal /Brainspotting and in-depth Psychodynamic therapy. I help adults and college students with stress, depression, PTSD, sexual trauma, loss, grief, anger, gender dysphoria, parenting, and young adult challenges. I have worked in psychiatric hospitals, special education (ADHD, ASD), & in home-based trauma care (TF-CBT).

My experiences growing up in a rural community, serving in the church, in human resources, and in social justice work have made me passionate about walking alongside people who have experienced marginalization and trauma in the workplace, in the church, at school, and in their communities – especially around issues related to sexuality and gender. I have a great passion for working with children, teens, young adults, and women struggling in self-esteem and body image issues. Alexa has spent her life gaining personal and career experiences to provide support and empathy to those who could benefit from an experienced and empathetic emotional wellness partner. With a Masters degree in Social Work from GVSU, experience in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors, Alexa comes to your table to be on your team as a partner, mentor, and support person, to help you navigate the twists and turns that life will throw your way.

I am nurturing, yet direct in my approach and see working towards tangible change as important. Therapy in my office is always client led coupled with some therapist guided cognitive changes to approaching problems and setting concrete goals. I come with 20 years of clinical experience working with individuals, families as well as with couples and groups. My experience has stemmed from a variety of settings including domestic violence shelters, psychiatric units, juvenile detention centers, college campuses and private practice.

I work with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, and low self esteem. I specialize in helping young adults navigate life transitions and challenging life stages (college, career concerns, marriage, divorce). I enjoy clients with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and problems. My personal style is warm and supportive, and my approach with clients is holistic in focus. For over 20 years I have been involved in the mental health system and have had the privilege of helping individuals & families achieve their goals and overcome a variety of challenges (i.e. depression, anxiety, mood disorders, new transitions, relational, & substance abuse struggles). While speaking both English & Spanish languages, my hope is that each individual that I encounter will gain a better understanding of themselves, and also learn valuable skills to move forward towards a more fulfilling and flourishing life---to be able to find 'Peace of Mind'--within themselves and within their surroundings.

I enjoy coaching clients and professionals through life-stressors, trauma recovery (PTSD), mediating relational issues in couples and family therapy, and helping clients develop healthy coping skills for anxiety, depression, mood and impulse disorders. I help clients set and reach achievable long and short term goals to give them a sense of productivity and accomplishment through solution-focused therapy.
