I have worked as a clinical psychologist for over 40 years, specializing in psychodynamic and interpersonal insight therapy, primarily with young, mature, and older adults. Philosophically, I believe anyone can overcome obstacles to living a good life with the assistance of an experienced psychotherapist in the context of a supportive and empathic therapeutic relationship. I enjoy working with people who are highly motivated to take an honest look at themselves, their history and relationships, and who seriously want to make changes in their lives.

I am a licensed psychotherapist in private practice, in California. My approach to therapy is commonsense, based in Dialog, reflective listening, mindfulness based cognitive therapy in conjunction with breath work, journaling and dream journaling and practicing being present. I take my clients seriously, I take our work together seriously, but I don’t take myself too seriously: my primary purpose is to be of service, to be useful to my clients. Our experiences are a map of where we have been, and what it was like. Our ‘stories’ are a mixture of moments we are proud of, grateful for and moments which we would rather not repeat.

Trauma, anxiety, and addiction can make you feel stuck. The most important step towards healing is to address the unresolved emotion inside you. Healing requires feelings. Acceptance slowly dissolves pain. When we function from the fear and scarring of our trauma, the cycles continue until we learn how to transmute that energy into love. I apply a Holistic approach that integrates physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual forms of well-being, addressing the “whole” self. Through a holistic framework tailored to your unique needs, the goal is to support you develop a deeper understanding of the self on all these levels.

To follow my first mind is a Southern expression to explain the power and importance of listening and trusting one's intuition and gut instinct to care for and support oneself. Your first mind is knowing without conscious knowing, a higher power, the universe, you. It reminds you of your worthiness, your strength, and your connectedness. If you desire to experience life more authentically, to fortify your intuition, and to hear your first mind either for the first time or with more clarity. In that case, I welcome the opportunity to work with you.

I specialize in helping people who are socially attuned to others' needs to the point that they may lose themselves. Working together, my clients build confidence & a stronger sense of self that helps them negotiate conflicting roles and identities. This can involve processing sadness and frustration, which unlocks new sources of connection, happiness, & focus in their personal and work lives. In my time at Caltech, I worked with high achievers navigating complex expectations. As we assess values & sources of joy, my clients develop a stronger understanding of what fulfills them, & where and with whom they want to devote their time.

Welcome. I work primarily with couples and couples who are parents. Parenting and marriage play significant roles in our lives and they got harder during Covid. New parents especially are coping with topics that their relatives and friends with older children may have a hard time relating to. I am here to help new parents and couples navigate this transition time as individuals, partners, and parents. I rely heavily on attachment theory, Gottman method techniques for couples and raising emotionally intelligent children, and mindfulness.

I became a psychologist because I am interested in people's stories. What has happened? What is it that makes you so sad, so anxious, so stressed? I believe that working together we can make sense of your story and your pain, and find ways to alleviate it. I have been in practice in Pasadena for 27 years. I work with adults, adolescents and children.

Sometimes life can be like standing in a garden filled with weeds that are 20 feet tall leading you to feel stuck, suffocated, and lonely. It can be hard to know where to start and how to make your way through the weeds. Depression and anxiety can often make us feel the same way. What are the current weeds in your life? Grief? Anxiety? Dating? Relationship conflicts?

The dominant culture tells us that speeding up and maximizing convenience will lead to happiness, yet many of us feel more isolated, confused, ashamed and less alive to possibility than ever. The right collaborative relationship with a therapist can offer a path away from fleeting illusions and toward the cultivation of true fulfillment and joy. We can’t alter the past but we can transform our relationship to it. Work begins w/ sharing feelings in a safe space so they become bearable, allowing us to see the dynamics giving rise to them and deepen insight about what needs to change.

Over the last 27 years as a clinical psychologist, I have helped many individuals, couples, and families. Individual clients often enter therapy feeling disconnected and lost. They have reached a point where the usual ways of coping are not working and are open to trying something new. Couples often come to see me feeling exhausted, alienated, and hopeless about their relationship. They wonder whether their relationship can recover and heal. My work with families includes addressing the profound sense of detachment between parents and teenagers, particularly when compounded by the presence of teen depression.

The process of finding a therapist can often be a daunting first step, and it can be difficult to know who to trust and who can help. A good fit with a therapist includes a feeling of safety and a belief that your therapist has the ability to help you. Clients who find themselves at home in my practice are people who experience chronic depression or anxiety, individuals with a history of family wounding, individuals with relationship or identity issues, couples with difficulty resolving arguments, teens in crisis, and those feeling stuck or in transition.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Pasadena?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
