The choice to seek counseling can begin a life changing process. I have been providing counseling for individuals, couples and families for over 20 years. My areas of expertise include the treatment of depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship issues, and other mental health concerns. I utilize a caring and respectful approach and tailor sessions to each person's unique situation. My primary treatment modality is mindfulness based cognitive behavior therapy. However, I also take a systemic approach to relationships and often incorporate aspects of psychodynamic and narrative therapies when needed.

My primary model is psychodynamic which is insight-oriented.
I believe that every human is shaped by an interplay of factors that come from within and without the person. That is to say that the power of therapy comes from a deeper understanding of the forces inside and out that shape a person into a unique individual. I also find that the center of psychotherapy is the relationship--the relationship with those in one’s life, the relationship with the therapist, and the relationship with oneself. Whether you are seeking therapy to find a deeper purpose in your life, or you are experiencing life’s challenges in the form of pain, anxiety, depression, loss, or conflict, I am here to help.

I take an eclectic approach to counseling, utilizing interventions from IFS, psychodynamic psychotherapy, somatic therapy, DBT, attachment theory, and others while working with clients through a feminist, person-centered lens.
My hope as a psychotherapist is to build a relationship based on trust, respect, and hopefulness with my clients. I view psychotherapy not only as a way to address symptoms, but as a gateway to more joy, wholeness, and pleasure in our lives.

I incorporate my training of mindfulness, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and expressive therapy (art therapy) to help my clients in reducing anxiety and emotional distress, and thus improving understanding and self-awareness. I’m an artist, a free-thinker, and a trauma survivor. Painting and drawing on a daily basis has allowed me to explore emotions, survive, and know that we are not alone in this one wild and precious life we are living. I want to take care of what’s coming up in your life without judgment and help unlock those parts of you that seem impossible to look at.

Our goal is to help you uncover your true potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating. We all experience moments that leave us feeling hopeless, sad, frustrated, angry, or frightened. However, life is not meant to be lived in that place of darkness. While we can't change the past, we can work together to better understand and resolve challenges in your life. Using complementary therapy approaches and techniques, we will help unearth old behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life. If you're ready to take steps forward, we are ready to help.

My approach to therapy is a culmination of my life's work with people in a variety of settings. My philosophy of therapy grows out of my many years as an interfaith pastoral care giver. I have worked with trauma at Albert Einstein Medical Center (Philadelphia, PA). I am a Veteran with combat experience as a Chaplain during Operation Iraqi Freedom. I have served as a clinical, interfaith, spiritual care provider at Pitt County Memorial Hospital (Greenville, NC), Duke HomeCare and Hospice (Durham, NC), and Rex Hospital (Raleigh, NC). I believe that people are "living human documents" continually under revision.

We all have parts of ourselves that we don’t fully understand or embrace. Sometimes these aspects of us can create challenges and get in the way of living life with intention, joy, and ease. By developing curiosity and compassion for ourselves and others, we can begin to untangle our stories and view them through new lenses. I work to empower my clients to find meaning and reconnect with their authentic selves. By integrating all parts of ourselves, we can experience incredible transformation. I want to help you find lasting growth and balance, not just temporary relief.

I am a counselor who understands how it feels to sit in front of a therapist, that is why compassion is important to me. Vulnerability can be difficult, but we can create a safe space so when you're ready, we can change the difficulties interfering with your wants. That is therapy, getting what you need to get what you want. For example, depression has different flavors, but it keeps us from engaging fully in life and/or losing focus on what our dreams are. Whatever you are seeking to make life better and better, I am here to help. In person sessions can be scheduled on a limited basis but Telehealth with be offered on going.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
