My name is Thorne (they/them) and I am a white, queer, non-binary licensed clinical social worker associate (LCSWA) offering both individuals and couples/relationship therapy in Durham, NC. My work is grounded in fierce compassion and a belief that everyone is capable of healing and feeling like they belong. It is my experience that one of the key elements of transformative therapy is our relationship; that we are a good “fit” and that you feel safe to share your joy, anger, grief, and tears. My style is gentle, attentive, playful, and person-centered–drawing from relational, narrative, and attachment-based therapy approaches.

I practice from an approach that incorporates elements of psychodynamic psychotherapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and relational-cultural therapy, among other modalities.
I became a therapist because I value complexity. We each have our own vision for a life that feels vibrant, authentic, and fulfilling. As your therapist, it's my job to walk with you through the process of learning about yourself, growing, and getting more of what you want out of life. I work primarily with queer and trans people age 11 and older but offer individual, relationship, and family therapy services to clients of all backgrounds. I also offer autism and ADHD assessments for adolescents and adults.

There are times when we all need someone safe, objective, and curious to sit with us through the messy parts of life that make us human. Through my training and experience as a queer sex therapist, I have a deep appreciation for the complexity of stress, life changes, internal stories and illness. Our time together would be spent identifying your strengths, challenging some unhelpful thoughts and behaviors, and honoring that you are the expert of your life. Together, we’ll hopefully laugh a ton and learn about your path and story in a safe nonjudgmental space.

For so many of us, the past several years of pandemic and political unrest have taken a serious toll on our well-being, our mental health, our sense of belonging, and even our faith in humanity itself. In order for us to figure out how to navigate the tension between the world’s brokenness and its wholeness, I believe we first have to learn to navigate that tension within ourselves. As a therapist, I’m privileged to get to journey alongside people who are engaging in that work and to help my clients develop and access whatever tools and strategies will be most effective for them in their unique circumstances.

Relationships can be painful and frustrating. Sometimes, it might feel like you’ve gotten on an emotional roller coaster you didn’t sign up for. You’re so tired of having the same fights over and over. Maybe you’re looking for a therapist to help you and your partner(s) learn how to communicate, regulate your emotions, and be vulnerable with each other. Maybe you're considering opening your relationship and you want support talking about boundaries and expectations. Or you need help repairing after you or one of your partners damaged the trust of your relationship. You don’t have to do this alone.

Because therapy is a relational process, it has the power to heal holes from all types of trauma, and reconnect you with your innate belonging and place in the world.
Welcome. I specialize in LGBTQ affirmative therapy, with a focus on trans/gender identity issues. Our sessions address your authentic needs and what is important to you. This leads to improved mood and confidence and success in transitioning. As your natural self emerges, you shed old layers of self doubt, and your relationships feel more alive.

I use an eclectic therapeutic style to explore what works for you, integrating primarily relational psychodynamic, narrative, and somatic approaches.
If you’re reading this, you're probably considering the vulnerable, messy, beautiful, healing work of therapy. You may also be: feeling “stuck” and uncertain of what’s next, high-achieving and grappling with a harsh inner critic, finding that how you've been coping isn’t working anymore, feeling out of sync with your values or how you want to live your life, wanting to know yourself better in your next stage of life, feeling overwhelmed by your emotions, feeling unheard or seeking deeper connection in your relationships. Maybe you're a graduate student or LGBTQ+ person wanting to process the varied challenges and pleasures of life.

My work is grounded in compassion, affirmation and empathy. I believe that identifying and honoring one's strengths, especially in the context of struggle, is important to growth and healing. It's difficult to let go of old patterns that once helped you cope or survive but are now harmful. I can support you in finding your way through.

Want to support your transgender or nonbinary child? Looking for a therapist with some shared lived experiences but also plain old therapist experience? People who work with me say things like "I'm worried about a relationship", "Life totally sucks right now and I don't know what to do", "How do I navigate parenthood on top of everything else"?, "It's hard to find my community and I'm lonely", "I've becoming a 'professional gay' which comes with its own challenges" . "I am leaving or have left an abusive relationship". If you're ready for some deep exploration that honors your values, culture, and spiritual practices, let's do it!

It can be scary to be honest with oneself, let alone with others. Yet, most of us still desire to be seen, loved, and accepted. I work with people curious about how their childhood, cultural background(s), identities, and trauma influence how they relate to themselves, family, lovers, friends, and authority figures. My work centers on anti-racism and the lived experiences of folks who are Queer, Transgender, Polyamourous, or Kinky. I enjoy working with people outside of these identities as well. Modalities I utilize are Relationship Analysis, EMDR, Parts Work, Psychodynamic Techniques, and Sex Therapy.

Maybe you want a space to process changes that are happening or you are struggling to figure out the next right steps to create the life you want. You want to live your life confidently, as the fullest version of yourself, but you are feeling alone or ashamed or overwhelmed. Or maybe you want to feel more connected to your partner, but you keep leaving interactions with them feeling like they just aren’t getting where you’re coming from. It's so easy to feel like you're stuck in the same patterns.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
