I work with clients struggling with eating disorders or disordered eating, poor body image, or trauma.
I treat clients who have a history of trauma and/or eating concerns. Maybe this resonates with you. Perhaps your trauma manifested in maladaptive behaviors, like cutting, an eating disorder, or risk behaviors. You have lost the ability to tune into your body and need help reconnecting with your body's wisdom. Using mindfulness, EMDR, and other body-based interventions, I can help you process trauma and develop healthy coping skills to replace the ones that cause you pain.

My experience includes working with individuals struggling with eating disorders, body image disturbance, identity, and life transitions.
Does feeling whole seem impossible? Are your self-worth and happiness tied to what you see in the mirror? Do you displace pain and pressure in disordered eating or other spaces that do not serve you? Is your identity dependent on how others see you? Do you feel lost inside yourself? This can feel like a war, a losing battle. Unfortunately, you may be in a vicious cycle that feels impossible to beat. It may have led to social isolation, increased anxiety, and feelings of hopelessness and helplessness.

I have extensive experience helping individuals struggling with eating disorders, disordered eating, self esteem, body dysmorphia, anxiety, depression, life transitions, and relationship issues.
My role as therapist is to act as your partner in treatment and help you work toward your goals. I work to support and guide you while we investigate thoughts, feelings and behaviors together that may be interfering with your success and happiness. Prior to my clinical career I spent over a decade as a behavioral neuroscientist in academic, pharmaceutical, and biotech settings. This work informs my therapeutic style. I have an eclectic theoretical orientation with a behavioral focus towards Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I utilize a psychodynamic lens to explore the origins of symptoms.

Take the time to invest in yourself through therapy. For well over a decade, I have been honored to work with people from all walks of life. I have found that growth comes when we slow down and invest time in exploring our own beliefs, relationships, and behaviors. Sometimes we need a guide to help make sense of that process: a therapist. For over a decade I have honed my skills in working with grief, trauma, life transitions, mood disorders, anxiety, disordered eating, obesity, caregiver stress, women's issues, and more. While I am trained and certified in various modalities, treatment is tailored to each patient's goals

Imagine that with some time you learn to trust me, but really trust me. You feel like you can be just as you are and like you don’t need to wear a mask, even in the midst of sharing a fear or being vulnerable. Imagine that when you are doing this I don’t run away or trivialize what is giving you trouble or how you hurt. Instead, I sit with you – sometimes over and over. There is no need to change or be different before I can accept you. Then, when it’s right, I will learn to attend to your troubles carefully and decisively.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
