I believe that everyone is doing the best they can within their circumstances. I believe that everyone is entitled to good, competent non-judgmental mental health services. I believe that everyone is entitled to do better, and most people want to. I believe we live in an existential world and our way of moving through the universe can and should be whatever we desire. I believe that everyone deserves to be treated with empathy, unconditional positive regard in a way that is true to them and true to their counselor. I believe the relationship between client and counselor the most important factor in successful outcomes.

I believe strongly in forming a warm and collaborative relationship and tailoring my approach to your needs and goals. Since no two clients are the same, I am very flexible in my approach. Depending on your struggles, goals, and needs, I might be highly directive or non-directive, always providing a safe space to work through your thinking and emotions. I am eclectic in my work, meaning I draw from many techniques/orientations including cognitive-behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, and existential therapy. My first goal is always to develop a collaborative relationship, as I consider us partners in this process.

Life is tough at best, traumatic at worst. People let us down or we let ourselves down. We may repeat patterns that once seemed to work for us, but are now impeding our growth. Often we know what we "should" do to feel better, but can't seem to actualize our intentions. Or we become so overwhelmed with messages that we have to fix ourselves that over time our resolve weakens and we feel stuck, frustrated, and helpless. It can feel uncomfortable to ask for help when we're struggling, but we are not wired to walk this life alone; we all need a safe space where we can share our hurts, disappointments, and losses.

Serving kids, teens, and young adults. I use a person-centered strengths based approach in counseling practice. Clients are able to utilize their strengths to identify strategies and coping skills to manage their needs, and maximize new coping skills as their human development unfolds. I believe in the importance of establishing a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship, where people feel heard, understood, and empowered to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences as they grow into the best version of themselves.

Available virtually anywhere in Massachusetts, I understand the unique challenges, pressure, and stress experienced by those in first responder jobs, including police officers, firefighters, paramedics, military and veterans, hospital personnel, and other emergency services workers. Witnessing traumatic events can lead to anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and emotional support is crucial for your own well-being as well as your family. You have the power to not only manage these challenges with therapy but thrive in spite of them.

Dr. Packard is a Modern Psychoanalyst and Licensed Mental Health Clinician. He has demonstrated an unique ability to integrate various forms of therapy into one unified approach; a blend of cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic therapy for problems of everyday life. Why use Integrative Psychotherapy? Most clinicians know that no one single theory or therapy works for all clients, all problems or situations. However, the vast majority of therapists strongly adhere to one particular approach which is fine if their approach matches the client they are seeing, the problem they are treating, where the client is in treatment, and so forth.

For me, psychotherapy must address the needs of the person. Sometimes this can mean exploring how you got to the point you are at, and how you want to change; and sometimes you may want specific tools to address a very specific issue. Finding the right therapist is perhaps one of the most important choices you will make and also one of the most difficult. Although a therapist may have an armory of techniques to use, what I have found to be at the heart of any type of psychotherapy is whether the relationship works between you and your therapist.

Does insurance cover therapy, prescriptions and other behavioral health services?

In general, yes. Laws in the U.S. require insurers to cover essential behavioral health care at the same level as other health care services. Most health plans require a medical diagnosis and treatments that are evidence based and medically essential. This means that life coaching and alternative therapies are not covered, nor is therapy without a diagnosis. Call the number on the back or your insurance card or visit your insurance company's website to review your Summary of Benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, your Human Resources department may also be able to answer questions.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?

The cost of therapy depends on your region, how much training and experience your therapist has, and the type of treatment. The rate for talk therapy generally falls between $100 and $250. For a client seeing an in-network provider, the cost of therapy is often similar to the cost of other health care services. Clients pay co-pays and may need to satisfy a plan’s deductible before benefits kick in.

What is the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network insurance coverage?

An in-network provider has contracted with an insurer to get paid directly for services, and to accept the insurer’s rate of compensation. Clients are responsible for deductibles and copays. If a therapist is out of network, that means that the client pays the therapist directly for services at the therapist’s regular fee. Out-of-Network providers often give clients a receipt so that they can file for partial reimbursement with their insurance company.

Is it difficult to find an In-Network therapist?

It is not unusual for therapists to limit the number of insurance patients in their practice, so it’s important to check in-network availability when you schedule your first appointment. In regions and times where therapy is in high demand it may take longer to get scheduled with an in-network therapist.

What is the difference between HMO and PPO insurance plans?

HMO health plans only cover in-network services, there is no reimbursement for out-of-network providers. PPO plans often cover both in- and out-of-network services, though the client may pay more for out-of-network services.

What is a Superbill?

A superbill is a receipt for therapy services. It provides all the information required by insurance companies to reimburse you for out-of-network services, including the diagnostic codes for your care, the amount paid, and the dates and duration of care.

Does insurance cover Online therapy?

Many therapists who shifted their practice to online therapy during the pandemic have kept that arrangement. And most insurers continue to cover telehealth services, with a few exceptions. Preventive care (such as an annual depression screening) is often required to be in-person to be covered, and some states require prescribers of controlled substances to see those patients in person.

Does insurance cover Group therapy?

Many insurance plans provide coverage for group therapy provided there is a medical diagnosis for group members, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. For example, Medicare does not always cover group therapy. Group therapy tends to cost less than individual therapy.

Does insurance cover Couples therapy?

Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples therapy because there is no medical diagnosis or medically necessary treatment. However, a few plans will offer a limited benefit, so it is still worth checking with your insurance company. Sometimes therapy is covered for a couple when one person has a diagnosis and another family member joins them for joint therapy, but it is considered therapy for the medical condition that includes a family member as a listener or helper, not couples counseling. Without insurance, most clients pay between $100-300 per 60-90 min session for couples therapy. Often clients can find classes or workshops that make it more affordable to work on their relationship. And some employers offer benefit plans that help defray the cost of couples therapy.
