Treatment methods include Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, and strengths-based approaches.
Coping with life challenges is not something you have to go through alone. Many people seek therapy for support, information, and new ideas on how to better handle the curve balls that life can throw sometimes. I believe that human beings are incredibly resilient and sometimes need assistance in recognizing their own inner strength to create positive changes in their lives. The therapeutic relationship should be collaborative, built upon both mutual respect and independence, and I hope to empower my clients to find opportunities for personal growth so that they can move forward with their goals.

I find it vital to practice mindfulness to break the conditioning that we aren’t worthy of rest, slowing down, or taking care of ourselves unless we’re actively “doing.
My name is Luz (she/they)! I understand that therapy can be scary! It’s not easy opening up to a stranger, but I want you to know I will meet you where you are. I believe in treating my clients with softness and aim to build trust and safety in the therapeutic relationship through empathy and patience. In our capitalist society, it is easy for us to go on autopilot and simply work, work, work. That is completely valid since we need to work to survive. However, slowing down and being mindful of our breath, what we feel in our bodies, and simply listening to our heartbeats reconnects us to not only ourselves, but the Earth.

I also integrate a mindfulness perspective focusing on the "here and now".
Choosing to begin therapy shows incredible inner strength. Difficult situations can be managed with the strength of the individual along with the help of an external support system. My goal is to be a part of that support network and to cultivate a safe and supportive environment where we can identify, explore, and work through challenging issues. I work with clients towards change in areas including depression, anxiety, grief, relationship issues, self - esteem, trauma, and life transitions.

My style of therapy is inspired by mindfulness based and trauma informed processing.
Life is challenging, pushing us to our limits and out of our comfort zones, but you don’t have to face the change alone. As Brené Brown said, “when we numb the painful emotions, we also numb the positive emotions.” Rather than trying to struggle with and overpower those feelings, we can work together to embrace and accept them in order to move forward. I aim to collaborate, empower, and teach you to work with any negative or painful emotional triggers. From our work together, I hope you find lightness and joy in your life again!

My approach is grounded in mindfulness-based, mind-body centered, anti-oppressive and trauma-focused techniques that honor every part of who you are.
As a trauma and couples therapist, I work with survivors of sexual and interpersonal violence and those impacted by traumatic generational cycles or systemic oppression. Depression, anxiety, issues with focus and attention, rumination, chronic pain, identity crisis, and relationship issues act as alarms that tell us things need to change. Seeking therapy can be an empowering first step in reclaiming trust in yourself, your body, and your relationships. In couples therapy, we will work on communication, rebuilding intimacy and sexuality, and creating security and stability while ditching social scripts that don't serve you anymore.

Maybe you have tried traditional talk therapy, yoga, or self-help apps but you haven't found that sense relief from stress, anxiety, depression or grief. Grounded in the use of mindfulness and the creative arts therapies - art, movement, music, and drama - we believe the steps towards clarity, growth, and empowerment are about much more than talking. We are constantly thinking, feeling, sensing, expressing, interpreting, and responding to daily experiences. Your sessions will holistically explore all of these parts of your experience while gaining new skills to cope with stress, trauma, relationships, loss, or a new life change.

I utilize an integrative therapeutic approach that incorporates Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, mindfulness, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
As a psychotherapist, I work with clients to validate their struggles, help them understand past patterns and motivations, derive new insights, and ultimately lead to commitment-driven change. I believe all people understand their needs and wants inherently, and therapy can serve as the conduit to better understand and elicit the best approach for each individual, allowing them to advocate for the future they imagine for themselves. Therapy is a collaborative effort and I seek to walk beside clients, engaging and encouraging them through a strengths-based approach that facilitates understanding and fosters change.

I borrow from attachment theory, parts work, mindfulness, systems theory, and somatic therapy.
As a queer, sex-positive and neurodivergent affirming therapist, I am passionate about working with folks whose experience is shaped by feeling "different"- due to sexuality, gender, ADHD/Autism, or relationship orientation. Many of my clients experience interpersonal challenges including social anxiety, people-pleasing, and fears of rejection. I am here to provide gentle feedback about the ways you can be kinder to yourself and practice firm but flexible boundaries.

Modalities I draw from include attachment theory, psychodynamic theory, mindfulness, somatic approaches, as well as CBT, DBT, and ACT.
I am drawn to working with people who want to be more present in their lives–people striving, and perhaps struggling, to move toward connection and vulnerability with others (and oneself) and away from self-judgment and critique. I work with people college-age and older, and my areas of interest are anxiety, depression, life transitions, sleep disorders/insomnia, chronic health issues, relationships, dating, ADHD, and issues related to family-of-origin.

Does insurance cover therapy, prescriptions and other behavioral health services?

In general, yes. Laws in the U.S. require insurers to cover essential behavioral health care at the same level as other health care services. Most health plans require a medical diagnosis and treatments that are evidence based and medically essential. This means that life coaching and alternative therapies are not covered, nor is therapy without a diagnosis. Call the number on the back or your insurance card or visit your insurance company's website to review your Summary of Benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, your Human Resources department may also be able to answer questions.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?

The cost of therapy depends on your region, how much training and experience your therapist has, and the type of treatment. The rate for talk therapy generally falls between $100 and $250. For a client seeing an in-network provider, the cost of therapy is often similar to the cost of other health care services. Clients pay co-pays and may need to satisfy a plan’s deductible before benefits kick in.

What is the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network insurance coverage?

An in-network provider has contracted with an insurer to get paid directly for services, and to accept the insurer’s rate of compensation. Clients are responsible for deductibles and copays. If a therapist is out of network, that means that the client pays the therapist directly for services at the therapist’s regular fee. Out-of-Network providers often give clients a receipt so that they can file for partial reimbursement with their insurance company.

Is it difficult to find an In-Network therapist?

It is not unusual for therapists to limit the number of insurance patients in their practice, so it’s important to check in-network availability when you schedule your first appointment. In regions and times where therapy is in high demand it may take longer to get scheduled with an in-network therapist.

What is the difference between HMO and PPO insurance plans?

HMO health plans only cover in-network services, there is no reimbursement for out-of-network providers. PPO plans often cover both in- and out-of-network services, though the client may pay more for out-of-network services.

What is a Superbill?

A superbill is a receipt for therapy services. It provides all the information required by insurance companies to reimburse you for out-of-network services, including the diagnostic codes for your care, the amount paid, and the dates and duration of care.

Does insurance cover Online therapy?

Many therapists who shifted their practice to online therapy during the pandemic have kept that arrangement. And most insurers continue to cover telehealth services, with a few exceptions. Preventive care (such as an annual depression screening) is often required to be in-person to be covered, and some states require prescribers of controlled substances to see those patients in person.

Does insurance cover Group therapy?

Many insurance plans provide coverage for group therapy provided there is a medical diagnosis for group members, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. For example, Medicare does not always cover group therapy. Group therapy tends to cost less than individual therapy.

Does insurance cover Couples therapy?

Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples therapy because there is no medical diagnosis or medically necessary treatment. However, a few plans will offer a limited benefit, so it is still worth checking with your insurance company. Sometimes therapy is covered for a couple when one person has a diagnosis and another family member joins them for joint therapy, but it is considered therapy for the medical condition that includes a family member as a listener or helper, not couples counseling. Without insurance, most clients pay between $100-300 per 60-90 min session for couples therapy. Often clients can find classes or workshops that make it more affordable to work on their relationship. And some employers offer benefit plans that help defray the cost of couples therapy.
