I work with people to understand what may be holding them back from achieving their goals, whether in relationships or professionally. Often, old patterns that are no longer useful and out of one's awareness are operating. These concerns come up both in individual and couple work. I focus on attachment patterns -- in couples, there is often a pursuer and an avoider, although these roles are not always fixed. I've seen these patterns in couples of all sexual orientations. I do my best to stay away from gender stereotypes and stay open to what is being communicated, both verbally and nonverbally.
How we relate is learned in the same part of the brain as driving. To change these procedures, it takes slowing down and repetition. Imagine trying to drive in England when you've been driving in the U.S. forever. You can do it, but it's hard at first.
I try to create an environment which facilitates talking about anything, including sexual concerns. I think I am open and non-judgmental. Whether we're talking about sex, relationships, work, substance use, I want to find out what the individual or couple hopes to achieve.
