Are you really bad at icebreakers? Or feel like a bundle of nerves when interacting with others? Even seeing people you like might elicit a feeling of dread. Dread of talking, dread of going to see them, dread of even getting ready to leave the house. A lot of our thoughts and feelings don’t always make sense. They don’t always match what we think we should be doing. We love these people, but we don’t want to go. Maybe you show up to work everyday, but you hate your job. Maybe your interaction with someone made you vey angry, even if it seems like it’s not a big deal.

People are sometimes challenged by turbulent emotions, transitions, losses or chronic mood issues. The day to day experience of emotional distress or an underlying sense of uneasiness affect vitality and are difficult to endure over time. Verbal dialogue within a relationship designed for you to freely express yourself, explore feelings and discover unconscious factors impacting you describes the change process of psychotherapy. I have seen many individuals over the years not only have symptom relief but find new paths while shedding patterns of disabling emotions, thoughts and behavior.

My approach is mindful, non-judgmental, and eclectic. I invite and challenge clients to build a stronger connection with themselves by using a strengths-based, evidence-based, and holistic approach. Therapy is an exploratory process where both people in the room are learners and teachers. I use a mixed-methods approach which takes from Motivational Interviewing, mindfulness, Psychodynamic, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, and other evidence-based somatic and cognitive techniques.

If you find yourself bumping into the same problems over and over again, issues involving maturation and development maybe involved. As a developmental clinical psychologist I appreciate growing up is a lifelong process requiring nearly constant adaptations, some of which may actually become counterproductive. Unfortunately, it's not always easy to see alternatives to our adaptations, even if we realize they no longer serve us well. In your therapy with me, we will join together in a therapeutic alliance discovering more about your ways of coping while identifing healthier one's, bringing greater peace and happiness to your life.

When it comes to starting therapy, I like to meet an individual for who and where they are. I want to learn about them and their ideas, hopes, failures and many different thoughts. Together we can start to uncover where there is uneasiness and slowly make changes where they are needed. We can also uncover and build upon the strengths you are aware and unaware of inside of you.

Hi there! I can’t wait to hear from you :) Have you been feeling anxious, stressed, worried, or depressed about your life and what’s happening around you? Feeling stuck or that you don’t have control, unsure, or that you are just going through the motions at times. Think to yourself.. When was the last time you celebrated a small or big win just because. Or the last time you sat down and said out loud “I’m REALLY proud of myself?” Well, I am proud of you for putting you first as you begin your therapy journey. Remember you are stronger than you know, don’t be so hard on yourself! Reaching out is a true sign of strength and courage.

My ideal clients are dealing with life. Transitions, trauma, relationships, or just dealing with the world...all of these things come without a manual of how to manage. I work with individuals in adolescence through adulthood dealing with a variety of issues such as trauma/PTSD, ADHD, anxiety, depression, and gender dysphoria. I meet with families struggling with poor communication and life transitions. I provide couples therapy to those struggling with communication, connection, boundaries, parenting, and exploring non-monogamy. I work with individuals and couples who identify as LGBTQIA+.

Life is beautiful! But the human experience can also be painful and difficult. Are you longing for peace and emotional well-being? Do you desire to make changes in your life, gain a new perspective, and heal? Anxiety, depression, trauma, abuse, grief, guilt, shame, and broken relationships can take a toll on the mind and body. I believe that restoration, wholeness, and health are possible. Sometimes we all need a radically non-judgmental ally to hear us, understand us, offer support and insight, and help equip us with the tools we need to live our best lives.

I believe that therapy should be individualized for everyone. Therapy is not one size fits all, and because of that I draw from an eclectic approach. I focus on empowering clients to take control of their lives and the way they think in connection with their actions. I view the client as the expert in their own life and it is important that they are heard, supported and validated through each part of the process. I am skilled and trained in Trauma-Focused CBT, CBT (in general) and DBT. I am willing to also explore other techniques and methods that would better suit my client if they find that these methods do not fit them.

I work to help people navigate their complex worlds in order to live a healthier, happier life. I believe that all components of one's life are interrelated. Stress, crisis, life changes and uncertainty happen to everyone, often without warning. When crisis or chaos strike, it is comforting to have someone listen in a safe, open, non-judgmental space in which you can uncover the inner strengths and skills you already possess. I work with clients to create this environment, through which genuine healing, change, and self-empowerment can occur.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in East Lansing?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
