The Virginia Institute of Pastoral Care is a pastoral counseling center open to everyone. There is a place for you here— whether you practice a faith tradition or are searching, whether you are looking for support as you take the next steps in your life or you feel sad, stuck or unhappy. Our counselors are trained mental health professionals, many of whom are also practicing clergy. But we don’t preach: we listen. We offer counseling for children, families, couples, and adults including seniors. Group therapy services are also available.

My philosophy of therapy is that individuals heal through the relationship they develop with an experienced therapist in a warm, accepting environment. Life can be difficult and we all develop ways to help us cope. Often the ways that we learn to cope can do more damage than good, over time. In these instances, it’s important to learn new ways of managing oneself in tough times. Therapy can help you learn alternative ways of coping and taking good care of yourself. It can also help to change any distorted perceptions you may have developed of yourself through past, difficult experiences.

You have been telling yourself and others that you are completely fine. You genuinely would like for this to be true but you are struggling. You aren't sleeping well and you can't focus at home or at work because you are consumed with worry and fear. You find yourself nervous all the time, overwhelmed, exhausted, and quick to anger. The activities you once enjoyed don’t seem appealing, and you would rather just stay home.

I hope to assist you with learning how to extend the kindness you give to others to yourself. I have experience with individuals across the lifespan experiencing significant emotional distress and with those struggling with transitioning between stages of life. I focus on ambiguous grief to assist anyone struggling to identify and establish the role they want to have in their own lives and create sustainable change.

My client focus is trauma and complexity. This can be a combination of grief, loss, a traumatic experiences and addiction issues. I enjoy putting many pieces together to help people untangle and resolve their issues. My style is relaxed and comfortable while helping people with big hurts such as PTSD, anxiety, depression or other serious mental health issues. I have a special place in my heart for veterans, I am one myself and I so appreciate and understand the sacrifice. I've heard what really happens in war situations. I can hear that. Additionally, I enjoy work with couples, both separately and together.

Children and teens who come to see me are often struggling at home and/or school. Typically, the family is frustrated and exhausted. The decision to seek therapy is a very difficult one. Choosing the right therapist is overwhelming. I am passionate about helping individuals and families that are overwhelmed and frustrated. I help children and adolescents that are overwhelmed by feelings of anxiety, anger, and depression. Individuals with a negative self image, unhealthy relationship and communication patterns, and divorce and/or family issues also commonly come to see me.

We live in a stressful time with a lot of demands and expectations on us. I believe achieving and maintaining mental health involves finding balance in our lives. My purpose as a therapist is to assist you in recognizing the areas of your life in need of healing, to help you identify your goals in therapy, and to offer support and guidance as we walk down a path of restoration together. My hope is that the strength you gain through therapy will translate into higher functioning in your everyday life. I utilize multiple evidence based theoretical approaches with clients to help guide them through the healing process.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia and a member of various professional organizations. I received my M.A. in School Counseling from The George Washington University in 2011 and gained my credentials for private counseling in Virginia in 2016. I am currently in my 3rd year of education as a PhD student in Counselor Education and Supervision from The University of the Cumberlands. I enjoy using evidence based practices and current research to provide the best possible treatments for my clients. I believe people can benefit from professional counseling for the unconditional regard it provides to clients.

I have over ten years of experience working with older adolescents and adults of diverse cultural backgrounds and intersecting identities. I strive to create a welcoming, supportive, and safe environment that fosters a relationship where you feel accepted, empowered, and able to express and gently explore vulnerable and painful feelings and thoughts. I am empathetic and not afraid to get down in the pit with you to explore the darkness and honor how the pain in your life illuminates what is most important to you.

Dr. Bohannon is a Licensed Professional counselor with a heart to see individuals, couples, and families completely restored. Dr. Donald Bohannon strives to bring an effective blend of experience, expertise, clarity, concern and action to the counseling process in order to maximize outcomes and provide genuine healing and wholeness to individuals, marriages and families. Dr. Bohannon is experienced in counseling children, adolescents, and adults. Emphasis include mood disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder, conduct disorder, attention deficit hyperactive disorder, depression, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, and trauma.

Building confident kids with social skills, advocating for the disabled with skills for employment, and strengthening family communications are the pillars of my passion. Helping children to cope and confidence for happiness, health, and healing can be answered with Play Therapy. Beginning and maintaining employment for individuals with disabilities can be intimidating. I provide support to adults with strategies to navigate through employment. Also, the home environment is first place where healthy family communication should begin through family counseling.

I am Licensed Professional Counselor, Approved Clinical Supervisor and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional in the state of Virginia. Over the past decade, I have provided therapy in a variety of settings, including: schools, homes, domestic violence shelters, medical clinics, a foster home, and traditional outpatient offices. I have been fortunate enough to provide therapy across four countries and over 10 cities. I specialize in offering marriage and family therapy grounded in Family Systems Theory with a specialization in Strategic and Brief Therapy.

I am co-owner of M&K Counseling Associates Inc which is a psychotherapy group practice in DC and VA. The goal of our service delivery is to improve functioning and mental well-being for adults, children, couples, and families in the DMV area. Individualized services are available to meet most client needs including services for: depression, anxiety, stress, trauma, mental disorders, alcohol and substance abuse issues, career and school challenges, youth and adolescent behavioral issues, relationship issues, and life-span issues.
