I use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to treat a broad range of mood and anxiety disorders. From 2004 until his death in 2021, I worked with Dr. Aaron T. Beck, who is regarded as the "father" of CBT, to develop and evaluate CBT treatment protocols for many types of clientele and treatment settings. I deliver these evidence-based treatments in my clinical practice. I work well with clients who seek an active, problem-focused, and evidence-based approach to resolve their emotional distress and life problems in a warm, supportive, and compassionate environment that is focused on the cultivation of a strong therapeutic relationship.

Do you sometimes need someone to talk to to open up about your worries and sadness, and hopes and dreams? Maybe you don't want to keep asking your friends/family to listen or maybe there isn't anyone to open up to at all. Now you don't have to do it alone...

You may be facing your first counseling experience or after years of working with other practitioners--willing to try again. When we first meet, I trust you will know you are safe and respected. I commit my full presence, deep interest, and willingness to be open to who you truly are. In other words, I am "teachable"--by you, for you and with you. And rather than fit you into a model, I will "learn and flex"--learn how you learn, change and grow and flex my skills, style and tools to find what works best for you.

I work best with older adolescents, adults and couples seeking a therapy relationship to count on as long as the work is helpful. I've provided brief treatment many times, but if you're in a rush, I'm probably not your ideal therapist. In 30+ years, I've come to believe that satisfaction in life and relationships depends largely on the quality of your relationship with yourself. Therapy is a process of exploring how you came to be where you are; looking at life in new ways; and risking new behaviors reflecting who you really are and what you want. Lasting change takes time.

If you’ve found me, perhaps you’re tired of feeling like the “strong one” or the “go-to person” in your circle. You want to be the hero for yourself this time around, you’ve come to the right place. So often, we get lost being what everyone else needs and forget to be who we need first. Life is filled with complexities, sprinkled in with the difficulties of our lived experiences and we find ourselves feeling out of whack! Whether you are struggling with the heaviness of depression, anxiety, life transitions, or chronic health conditions, there is something you can do about it.

Looking for a therapist is a courageous first step and making yourself vulnerable with a stranger can feel intimidating. I consider it a great privilege to sit with others, listen to their stories, and walk alongside them as they make steps towards change. I am highly empathetic, down to earth, & non-judgmental. I use relational and collaborative approaches in therapy and draw from cognitive behavioral techniques, eco-systemic structural family therapy, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness based strategies.

Life often rains on our plans, and I want to help you find a raincoat and dance in the storm, "fearless." I want to offer you support in learning how to cope with traumatic life experiences, losses, depression, compulsions, and anxiety. As someone diagnosed with ADHD and an autoimmune disease, I understand what it is like to navigate the world differently and crave understanding from those around you. I believe in offering palpable interventions, a little bit of humor, and alternative perspectives that will eventually allow you to be your own therapist and thrive in various environments. I also believe in you.

TELEHEALTH AVAIL: I am very interested in quickly discovering a person's needs and preferences. My style combines compassionate listening with active and direct problem-solving. I also tend to be humorous, which facilitates a more comfortable therapeutic relationship. I find that humor helps my clients to feel more at ease when they are discussing very difficult topics. I have a broad range of experience, particularly with trauma and anxiety disorders. However, I greatly enjoy working with all kinds of individuals and couples. Additionally, I am an adjunct faculty member in a local graduate program, and I have a private practice.

Does anxiety or depression keep you from being able to live the life you want? Are feelings of fear and worry stopping you from doing the things you want to do and impacting your relationships? Perhaps you are weighed down by shame, guilt and other negative thinking patterns. Is it difficult to engage with your teen without conflict or being shut down? These can be difficult to talk about and sift through on your own. My goal as a therapist is to create a safe place where you can share your story, experience healing, feel empowered and be inspired to live a meaningful and purposeful life.

Anyone seeking psychotherapy needs to sense a therapist's ability to deeply connect, to foster real vulnerability, without feeling judged. Some people desire help during personal crises or from a wish to grow. Others recognize a need for therapy after feeling stuck. Therapy can address symptoms that are more chronic in nature, which interfere with relationships or life satisfaction. Some people look for short-term therapy, to focus quickly on solution-oriented work, while others may feel more confusion about where to begin, needing time and support to clarify complicated thoughts and feelings. Together, we will develop your goals.

When you met your partner you likely didn't notice them across the room and say — "That looks like someone I could solve problems with." What attracts us to people initially usually has little to do with the factors that make conflict resolution possible — let alone productive and connective. Nobody teaches us how to do conflict well. It’s not a class in high school (although it absolutely should be). We aren’t born with these tools. In fact, some of our biology actively works against us here because our nervous system is wired to detect threat.

Life can be challenging. It can feel even more complicated when we're not feeling well and we can't seem to break free from whatever struggle is pushing us down. Let's think of therapy as a way of safely unfolding whatever distress you may be in so that we can discover the tools you need to put your life back together. In that process, I will offer you a variety of pathways, tools and interventions to help you discover how to connect with yourself better and understand what you need to be able to move forward in a healthy way.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.
Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
