Do you find yourself struggling with issues such as depression, anxiety, fear, anger, or insecurity? I aspire to bring joy and peace back to the wonderful people I get to work with on a daily basis. I loved working in the school setting as an elementary school teacher as well as a K-12 guidance counselor, and now bring this experience to my private practice. I especially enjoy working with children, teens, and women. Counseling with me will not be scary. I would love to help you discover your best self and eliminate what is holding you back!

Life can be hard, but we aren’t meant to go through it alone. It takes a village to raise a child. By seeking help for your child, your child learns to ask for help when they need it. If you’re reading this, you’ve taken the first step in reaching out for help. Learning to navigate through life as a child or teenager is difficult. Parenting can be stressful and overwhelming. I want to help you and your child learn to navigate life together. Your family may be going through a difficult change or your child may be struggling with stress from everyday life. Whatever it may be, we are here to help you.

I have been licensed as a Professional Counselor in Alabama since 1992 and a Clinical Fellow of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy since 1991. My Family Systems training focused on growth and health rather than on pathology and dysfunction. From a developmental perspective, dysfunction is a predictable consequence of growth. As children advance from crawling to standing and walking, they are unsteady, awkward, and are "dysfunctional" for a time. In the same way, transitional periods in the life cycle of families and individuals can be difficult. Depression, anxiety, and interpersonal conflict are often seen at these times and counseling can be helpful.

Are you in a place where your life story has caused you to feel down, anxious, or confused about how to move forward? Maybe something that has just happened, or something you have dealt with for a long time has brought you to this place. Two people may come saying they are depressed, but I know how this feels is very different from person to person. Understanding and respecting your situation is my goal, and we will work together to set your personal goals.

I believe people are looking for emotionally safe environments to talk about what is going on in their lives and how to implement coping skills to maintain a healthy mental health life. Everyone is struggling with something and often people are unable to talk about personal things with their family or friends. This is a safe place to do this with someone who is empathetic and compassionate and believes in finding healthy solutions to whatever is taking place. In therapy will work together to discuss your desired therapy goals and work together to get you there!

There are a number of things that can create feelings of hopelessness, overwhelm, anxiety and stress. Changes and transition in our lives, our perceptions of self, and conditions within our relationships may inspire a desire for further insight and understanding of what we find important as well as how we might like to grow. Through counseling, you may begin exploring stuck points and areas of growth, supporting you in finding relief from emotional pain and in cultivating self-compassion - increasing your ability to cope with challenging situations and circumstances as you experience them.

Does insurance cover therapy, prescriptions and other behavioral health services?

In general, yes. Laws in the U.S. require insurers to cover essential behavioral health care at the same level as other health care services. Most health plans require a medical diagnosis and treatments that are evidence based and medically essential. This means that life coaching and alternative therapies are not covered, nor is therapy without a diagnosis. Call the number on the back or your insurance card or visit your insurance company's website to review your Summary of Benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, your Human Resources department may also be able to answer questions.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?

The cost of therapy depends on your region, how much training and experience your therapist has, and the type of treatment. The rate for talk therapy generally falls between $100 and $250. For a client seeing an in-network provider, the cost of therapy is often similar to the cost of other health care services. Clients pay co-pays and may need to satisfy a plan’s deductible before benefits kick in.

What is the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network insurance coverage?

An in-network provider has contracted with an insurer to get paid directly for services, and to accept the insurer’s rate of compensation. Clients are responsible for deductibles and copays. If a therapist is out of network, that means that the client pays the therapist directly for services at the therapist’s regular fee. Out-of-Network providers often give clients a receipt so that they can file for partial reimbursement with their insurance company.

Is it difficult to find an In-Network therapist?

It is not unusual for therapists to limit the number of insurance patients in their practice, so it’s important to check in-network availability when you schedule your first appointment. In regions and times where therapy is in high demand it may take longer to get scheduled with an in-network therapist.

What is the difference between HMO and PPO insurance plans?

HMO health plans only cover in-network services, there is no reimbursement for out-of-network providers. PPO plans often cover both in- and out-of-network services, though the client may pay more for out-of-network services.

What is a Superbill?

A superbill is a receipt for therapy services. It provides all the information required by insurance companies to reimburse you for out-of-network services, including the diagnostic codes for your care, the amount paid, and the dates and duration of care.

Does insurance cover Online therapy?

Many therapists who shifted their practice to online therapy during the pandemic have kept that arrangement. And most insurers continue to cover telehealth services, with a few exceptions. Preventive care (such as an annual depression screening) is often required to be in-person to be covered, and some states require prescribers of controlled substances to see those patients in person.

Does insurance cover Group therapy?

Many insurance plans provide coverage for group therapy provided there is a medical diagnosis for group members, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. For example, Medicare does not always cover group therapy. Group therapy tends to cost less than individual therapy.

Does insurance cover Couples therapy?

Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples therapy because there is no medical diagnosis or medically necessary treatment. However, a few plans will offer a limited benefit, so it is still worth checking with your insurance company. Sometimes therapy is covered for a couple when one person has a diagnosis and another family member joins them for joint therapy, but it is considered therapy for the medical condition that includes a family member as a listener or helper, not couples counseling. Without insurance, most clients pay between $100-300 per 60-90 min session for couples therapy. Often clients can find classes or workshops that make it more affordable to work on their relationship. And some employers offer benefit plans that help defray the cost of couples therapy.
