There is a misconception that therapy is unidirectional, a place to seek advice or vent to a therapist. It is important for the client to be informed, valued, and understood by the therapist. Although therapy is not a, “quick fix” I have been told by many clients that they feel some improvement after the first 1-2 sessions. Usually, they report this shift as a sense of relief that they have finally made the first step to talk to someone. I practice with a Narrative Therapy approach. I believe that the problem is the problem and you are not the problem. I will work to open up space between you and the problem you are experiencing. Externalizing the problem creates new possibilities for interacting with the problem in a way that empowers you to have more agency in your life. I will work to help you develop a preferred storyline that is more in line with the hopes, beliefs and values that you hold dear, and work toward living life within that storyline instead of the problem-saturated story.

I use Mindfulness Practices to help people sit with, and tolerate what comes up. I use Self-Compassion Practices to help soothe what ails you, and I often use CBT to organize our plan going forward. This gives you tools that you can use immediately, and strikes a fine balance between listening and responding.
