In the words of international trauma experts “its teaching our clients how to focus on new stimuli they normally might not have noticed...” with “conscious inhibition of old responses”(Jana Fisher and Pat Ogden, March 2011). The intricacies of our humanness prevents freedom from all depression, anxiety, neurosis and traumatic bodily sensations. Yet.....

I can't imagine getting much out only hearing “uh-huh" or the overly used, “how does that make you feel?”. Therapy can be a conversation rather than a monologue. Occasional use of humor and swearing can help you lower stress and defenses when stuck in fear, uncertainty, or judgement. I don’t believe in a sterile language environment. I invite you to swear if it helps you express how difficult, unfair, scary, or delightful a situation is. I find this uncensored atmosphere leads to an honest therapeutic relationship.
