Specialties include: adult neurodiversity (ADHD, Autism +), bipolar, anxiety, depression, highly sensitive person, narcissist & borderline concerns, women in tech & STEM, body image, family dynamics & conflict, child-parent issues, underlying needs, communication, boundaries.
I help clients increase self-understanding, manage healthy relationships, & navigate career/societal challenges. I believe it’s important to feel proud of the things that make you unique & unlearn ideas that these traits are flaws. Self-acceptance begins when we take time to really notice who we are, the way we function most naturally, & how our identities have been infused with negative messages over time. Self-acceptance & self-compassion address issues at their root. With permission to be imperfect & by sustaining self-validating beliefs, we can relax.

Anxiety is annoying. Depression is annoying. It doesn't have to be. Trauma is overwhelming. You can learn to lessen and live with these struggles. Take control. The power is in your hands. It's a journey... or any other cliche saying that works in therapy. It's all welcome here. I work with clients diagnosed with a variety of mental health disorders including psychosis, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. I specialize in military and military family struggles. I also have experience working with law enforcement and other first responders.

Dealing with the weight of your emotions can be overwhelming especially if it's trauma. It's important to know that you don't have to face it all alone. These struggles can take a toll on your mental, emotional, and physical well-being over time, these struggles can be private or can affect your work and relationships. The good news is that together, we can work towards finding relief and healing. I believe in a collaborative and supportive approach, where you have the power to determine the goals you want to achieve. You’ve always been the strong one, right? But lately, you haven’t been feeling so sturdy - your moods are all over the place, your attention or motivation has drifted, and you just want to feel better. Maybe you just need to vent. Maybe you’re having difficulty trusting someone enough to show that vulnerability because of past trauma. That’s ok! You have taken the most courageous step by asking for help, and that is exactly where I will meet you.

With over thirty years of dedicated experience in the field of mental health, Susan stands as a beacon of hope and healing for those who are suffering. Her approach to therapy is grounded in real neurological and behavioral science. Client Testimonial "With some past counselors, I've often been put off by vaguely new age "feel good" sessions that never sought to address the actual underlying illness. Susan has helped me to identify why I reacted to something in a certain way, and how to catch myself from repeating those thinking traps. I feel great, my family has never been happier and my work life has soared to new heights."

We are all unique in our histories, yet feelings of anxiety, depression, loss, and love are all universal. Some days feel easy to handle, and others may feel overwhelming and unending. For many people, painful experiences outweigh the happier parts of their lives. I am so happy you have taken steps to feel better. I would love the opportunity to meet with you in person or talk via teletherapy. I would be honored to hear your story.

Are you riddled with anxiety, stuck in recurring, unhelpful patterns within your relationships? Is the grip of fear, anxiety, and depression leading you into a shame-induced spiral, hindering your ability to engage with life and connect with others? Perhaps you're grappling with uncertainty, unsure of your thoughts, needs, or the path forward. Trauma can cast a long shadow, leaving us feeling despondent, drained, and isolated. It can push us towards negative coping mechanisms, prompting us to shut the world out. In some moments, you might feel like you've lost a part of yourself, but you are not alone. You deserve to be truly seen.

Bipolar Disorder Therapists

What is the most successful approach to treating bipolar disorder?

Living with bipolar disorder can be challenging, and a number of therapies have been found effective in providing support to patients as they gain the skills to understand and manage the disorder. Family-focused therapy is often helpful for children and teens (the majority of cases develop before age 19); it aims to minimize mood cycling by improving family communication and reducing conflict. It also helps young people navigate the developmental challenges the disorder can create. Cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) and variants such as Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)help patients manage the thoughts and feelings that influence bipolar mood swings as well as develop specific behavioral strategies to counteract them.

What happens in therapy for bipolar disorder?

Because the patterns of mood switching and its triggers differ for each person and can change over time, mood tracking or monitoring becomes a basic way patients learn about the nature of their condition. One of the most common features of therapy is finding a workable method of mood monitoring, in which patients track their daily activities and rate their moods, then use the findings to adjust routines accordingly. Patients learn ways of handling the many stresses that arise in life so that they do not trigger mood swings.

What kinds of problems does therapy help with?

Like many other mental health disorders, BPD is heavily influenced by stress; therapy provides skills for coping with stressors of all kinds. Therapy is extremely important for helping individuals identify the situations that may trigger mood switching, so that mood swings can be prevented. Therapy may especially target recognition of the early stages of mood change so that they can be managed. In addition, therapy helps patients deal with the significant amount of turbulence the disorder can create in relationships and in work life.

What is the goal of therapy for bipolar disorder?

Therapy helps patients set up their lives to maintain stability so that their mood isn’t constantly threatened by daily events. Perhaps the first task of therapy is to educate people about the nature of the disorder. At the same time, a primary goal of therapy is to enhance adherence to drug treatment. Extended periods of mood stability can prompt patients to discontinue medication, triggering relapse, while the early phases of manic episodes can feel so energizing that patients stop medication, ushering in full-blown mania and the altered self-perception that can lead to destructive behaviors. Another major goal of therapy is to understand one’s mood patterns so as to minimize both the frequency and intensity of mood cycling.
