Waitlist for new clients
Seeking professional help is a significant and empowering personal decision. It’s an opportunity to sort through troubling thoughts and feelings, overcome obstacles, and search for new solutions and pathways for positive change and growth. It’s an acknowledgement of the desire and need to look at one’s life from a different perspective. I believe one of the most important components for guiding clients through this process is the establishment of a supportive, compassionate, and nonjudgmental therapeutic relationship. Within this framework, I strive to offer understanding, reassurance, acceptance, and hope.

You have many choices when it comes to picking a counselor/therapist, but what is the most important thing to consider when choosing? Does the person appear to be kind? Do they have the qualifications to serve you? Does he/she make you feel comfortable and ease the anxiety you might be feeling regarding sharing such personal information so quickly? How does the office environment feel (telehealth or in the office)? More importantly, how quickly do you feel your exact problem is being addressed?

I am glad you took the first step in reaching out and finding a therapist. I know life can be difficult, and going to therapy to talk about personal things that are affecting your life is very difficult. It is even worse when you feel alone, are a part of a small community, or have faced adversity in life. I am also aware that mental health struggles are not easy to manage alone. Sometimes, all you need is a safe, comfortable and nonjudgemental space to process life experience and express your struggles.

Often we face many challenges in our lives and need an outlet to figure out the road we will take on this next journey. Dealing with depression and anxiety can add to our level of stress. I have successful experience working with adults and older adults dealing with depression and anxiety, grief and loss, stress, divorce, family and care giving issues. With my previous experience working in hospitals and psychiatric hospitals for adults and older adults I bring skills to help you develop coping strategies as you might face these challenges.

I believe people are more than their issues and problems. Finding a therapist that fits can be a daunting task if you have problems with adjustment, grief, anxiety, depression, chronic illnesses, identity issues, and/or relationship issues. I'm a bilingual therapist that uses a strength-based approach to help the client reach their goals. I use an interpersonal and client-centered approach in a culturally sensitive framework and use humor when possible to help clients achieve goals.

Are there times when you feel alone? Have you experienced periods of sadness and frustration while attempting to do your best each day? Are you taking care of others and paying attention to your needs last? Are you struggling to make life changing decisions? Are you dealing with difficult relationships, stress, depression, anxiety or trauma? Sometimes you can feel uncomfortable opening up to the people closest to you. Did you know that talking to a therapist can feel as comfortable as chatting with a close friend?

My ideal client would be where you find yourself trying to hold it together, and you may not look for help until a situation has gotten worse and its almost a crisis. That situation will significantly affect your life, and you will hit a breaking point. This might be self-esteem, anxiety, depression, adjusting to life changes, codependency, grief, health issues, or just feeling stuck. It's hard to ask for help but here you are, and what you thought might work is not working any more. You would find yourself in my office feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, confused but feeling like you had taken the first step to finding HOPE.

Meeting someone new maybe anxiety provoking, but starting therapy? That is truly a daunting task! You’ve made the first step by recognizing that maybe you should talk to someone. Now, all of these bios sound about the same. Which one to pick? How do you know which one will help you the most? You may be thinking, “oh, forget it, I just can’t make that decision right now.” Or, “I don’t want to sit for an hour and cry while I tell a total stranger my life’s story.” Or, “what if someone finds out that I’m not perfect. What if this person thinks I’m crazy and wants to lock me away forever?“ …

Bipolar Disorder Therapists

What is the most successful approach to treating bipolar disorder?

Living with bipolar disorder can be challenging, and a number of therapies have been found effective in providing support to patients as they gain the skills to understand and manage the disorder. Family-focused therapy is often helpful for children and teens (the majority of cases develop before age 19); it aims to minimize mood cycling by improving family communication and reducing conflict. It also helps young people navigate the developmental challenges the disorder can create. Cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) and variants such as Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)help patients manage the thoughts and feelings that influence bipolar mood swings as well as develop specific behavioral strategies to counteract them.

What happens in therapy for bipolar disorder?

Because the patterns of mood switching and its triggers differ for each person and can change over time, mood tracking or monitoring becomes a basic way patients learn about the nature of their condition. One of the most common features of therapy is finding a workable method of mood monitoring, in which patients track their daily activities and rate their moods, then use the findings to adjust routines accordingly. Patients learn ways of handling the many stresses that arise in life so that they do not trigger mood swings.

What kinds of problems does therapy help with?

Like many other mental health disorders, BPD is heavily influenced by stress; therapy provides skills for coping with stressors of all kinds. Therapy is extremely important for helping individuals identify the situations that may trigger mood switching, so that mood swings can be prevented. Therapy may especially target recognition of the early stages of mood change so that they can be managed. In addition, therapy helps patients deal with the significant amount of turbulence the disorder can create in relationships and in work life.

What is the goal of therapy for bipolar disorder?

Therapy helps patients set up their lives to maintain stability so that their mood isn’t constantly threatened by daily events. Perhaps the first task of therapy is to educate people about the nature of the disorder. At the same time, a primary goal of therapy is to enhance adherence to drug treatment. Extended periods of mood stability can prompt patients to discontinue medication, triggering relapse, while the early phases of manic episodes can feel so energizing that patients stop medication, ushering in full-blown mania and the altered self-perception that can lead to destructive behaviors. Another major goal of therapy is to understand one’s mood patterns so as to minimize both the frequency and intensity of mood cycling.
