People come to therapy for all sorts of reasons. Perhaps you struggle with unwanted behavior patterns or difficulties in your relationships. Maybe you’re challenged by overwhelming emotions or struggle to know what you’re feeling at all. Or maybe you’re having trouble adjusting to new circumstances or making a big decision. These problems in living and many others may respond well to psychotherapy.

Feeling stressed, anxious, on edge, not allowing yourself to feel happy for fear of the next bad thing that might happen. Highly sensitive, you get hurt easily and the emotions take over leaving you doubting yourself and not able to trust others. It’s getting in the way of your life and your relationships. Trying to avoid it, keep yourself busy, or think your way out of it isn’t working. Your insecurity tells you to put others first, but then you feel used or taken for granted. You so want to be seen, heard, and acknowledged.

Clients present with many concerns, including depression, anxiety, substance abuse, trauma, and relationship issues to name a few. Everyone experiences emotional ups and downs, successes and failures. However, when one is stuck in the "downs" and the "failures" we may feel overwhelmed, anxious & depressed. Often one turns to unhealthy coping such as alcohol and drugs, eating, compulsive behaviors - shopping and exercising, isolation or avoidance. Untangling the unique threads of your life; and understanding how they affect you can be the beginning to feeling more in charge and living according to your values and desires.

Have you ever just wanted to sit down to off-load something that’s been eating away at you for too long? Recognizing the need for help and seeking professional therapy is a sign of strength and determination to live a productive and meaningful life. As a part of living our lives, we may encounter situations that are difficult to manage alone. Some seek support due to a situational crisis. Others seek treatment as a necessary aspect of managing a medical disorder, commonly known as a mental illness. Whether you are experiencing a life adjustment or more complex medical conditions, it is a well known fact that therapy helps.

My clients come into the office knowing one thing- they want a change. Often having an idea of exactly what it is that needs to change, and sometimes just knowing that 'it doesn't feel right'. I help my clients understand that each behavior is understood given the context that surrounds it. We will focus on the things that are not that obvious, perhaps it's the mere emotion that is motivating the behavior. Other times we might need to dig a little deeper. Together we work towards the same end goal: transformation.

Early in life we learn to disconnect from our bodies and emotions in order to survive and adapt to the environment. Overtime, this manifests as patterns of behavior and self-rejection that though were once adaptive, now only keep us stuck. These patterns typically manifest as anxiety, depression, self-hatred, toxic shame, addictions, obsessions, compulsions, codependency and relationship problems. I work experientially in the moment to get to the root of what is getting in the way of desired experiences on an identity level. Many clients describe this process as a gradual “coming home” or reconnection to their authentic self.

Therapy can be your space to explore questions about yourself & others and how to cope with your unique challenges in a deeper way. Over time you too can begin to feel how liberating it is to show up for yourself. "Imperfections" are just the best way you have been able to cope with life circumstances. Learn how to listen to your own internal wisdom and tolerate the emotions you may have been numb to or disconnected from. Develop new ways to cope and be in the world that support the life you want to create. You too can begin to build a life you may have only wished for by giving yourself the time and support you deserve.

I offer depth oriented therapy, meaning transformation through felt experience, getting in touch and being curious with the most complex parts of ourselves, examining wishes, fears, and possible traumas, and creating safety both relationally and internally for the exploration of these things. I place emotional safety at the forefront of my work as I believe that most psychological injuries are the result of being afraid, neglected or humiliated during states of emotional distress or need in the past. I work well with creative and deeply feeling and thinking people and those who have an authentic desire toward growth and healing.

I provide a candid, liberating, validating and irreverent experience for my clients, centered around self-discovery and creating a life worth living. I attract clients that have grown weary of the traditional therapy and want someone who's honest with them. I know what it's like to manage a personality disorder and how hard it can be to find the right treatment provider when you've finally have the right diagnosis. As a therapist who has experienced trauma, I’ve also heard a lot of smack talk about treating someone with BPD. The stigma I've experienced has fueled my interest in specializing in treating BPD and mood disorders.

Despite your best efforts, life is unknowable - you can't always predict or be prepared for what comes your way. You might need help sorting out what's going on. As a therapist, I have learned that we are not alone in our struggles. People hurt together, and we also must heal together. Through our relationships and experiences, we can grow and rediscover what we thought was once lost. I want to help you down that path of discovery while using psychotherapeutic approaches such as attachment theory, AEDP, IFS, interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB), Somatic Experiencing, and EMDR.

Bipolar Disorder Therapists

What is the most successful approach to treating bipolar disorder?

Living with bipolar disorder can be challenging, and a number of therapies have been found effective in providing support to patients as they gain the skills to understand and manage the disorder. Family-focused therapy is often helpful for children and teens (the majority of cases develop before age 19); it aims to minimize mood cycling by improving family communication and reducing conflict. It also helps young people navigate the developmental challenges the disorder can create. Cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) and variants such as Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)help patients manage the thoughts and feelings that influence bipolar mood swings as well as develop specific behavioral strategies to counteract them.

What happens in therapy for bipolar disorder?

Because the patterns of mood switching and its triggers differ for each person and can change over time, mood tracking or monitoring becomes a basic way patients learn about the nature of their condition. One of the most common features of therapy is finding a workable method of mood monitoring, in which patients track their daily activities and rate their moods, then use the findings to adjust routines accordingly. Patients learn ways of handling the many stresses that arise in life so that they do not trigger mood swings.

What kinds of problems does therapy help with?

Like many other mental health disorders, BPD is heavily influenced by stress; therapy provides skills for coping with stressors of all kinds. Therapy is extremely important for helping individuals identify the situations that may trigger mood switching, so that mood swings can be prevented. Therapy may especially target recognition of the early stages of mood change so that they can be managed. In addition, therapy helps patients deal with the significant amount of turbulence the disorder can create in relationships and in work life.

What is the goal of therapy for bipolar disorder?

Therapy helps patients set up their lives to maintain stability so that their mood isn’t constantly threatened by daily events. Perhaps the first task of therapy is to educate people about the nature of the disorder. At the same time, a primary goal of therapy is to enhance adherence to drug treatment. Extended periods of mood stability can prompt patients to discontinue medication, triggering relapse, while the early phases of manic episodes can feel so energizing that patients stop medication, ushering in full-blown mania and the altered self-perception that can lead to destructive behaviors. Another major goal of therapy is to understand one’s mood patterns so as to minimize both the frequency and intensity of mood cycling.
