For me, the focus of therapy is not primarily to fix disorders or cure diseases; I seek to increase your positive life skills rather than address negative patterns. What happens in the therapy hour is a microcosm of life at large. How you do anything is how you do everything. And so, I give special attention to the actual, to the present moment, in particular your immediate subjective experience. Ultimately, when you become aware of your resistance(s) to pain and return to wholeness and authenticity, my work is done.

My clientele is ready and willing for change. Working together, we move through the stuckness, mud, or whatever is holding one back from their highest dream or just the ability to feel safe again. They want to climb out of their dark hole, but need a rope; I am here to offer that rope. With my teenage/pre-teen clients, the need is to improve their sense of adequacy or self-esteem, free themselves from anxiety or depression, and rebuild their relationship with a parent figure whether it be due to divorce or due to conflict. My clients like my out-of-the box techniques and strategies that motivate and create forward movement.

As humans we have an immense power in our ability to gain insight into our own thoughts, feelings, and actions. However, we often get so caught up in our everyday activities that we are unable to fully understand what is happening on an intrapersonal level. Psychotherapy provides the opportunity to gain this insight, and make changes based upon what we learn, using effective strategies that have emerged from decades of research.

There's no question that psychotherapy is hard work for both the client and the therapist. I specialize in the treatment of the obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders(i.e., OCD, body dysmorphic disorder, trichotillomania, compulsive skin picking plus others), and know how challenging and frustrating the therapy can be at times. I work with my clients to develop an individualized treatment plan, designed to tackle each person's unique symptoms and needs. While these disorders are generally chronic in nature, the goal of more effectively managing the symptoms so someone can live a productive life is both reasonable and attainable.

I am an Adjunct Clinical Instructor at Stanford University and provide therapy to adults in my private practice. I enjoy helping clients become "unstuck" from painful thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns. These struggles may be new, or they may have been present for some time. Examples may include feelings of low self-worth, difficulty feeling connected to others, intrusive or "looping" thoughts, trouble managing anxiety and worry, or difficulty moving forward from a traumatic event or period of life.

I believe change is rooted in making the unconscious conscious. Rather than just treat the symptoms you may be struggling with, I enjoy journeying deeper with you, trying to understand the root of the issue. As you grow to understand your mind, you will begin to make more mindful, intentional life choices, toward a more satisfying life.

I believe in the innate power of human beings to heal & grow. You don't have to live with the pain of old experiences weighing you down or keeping you stuck; healing is possible & within reach. Are you struggling in relationships or at work? Are you trying to be the person, parent, or partner you want to be, but missing the mark? Do you want to finally learn to accept (& love) yourself fully & unconditionally, & allow others to love you as well? Counseling can help you find freedom & clarity and let go of what's holding you back. I'm certified in EMDR & can offer this modality for healing in addition to traditional talk therapy.

In our day to day lives, it can be difficult to notice when changes occur until we aren't able to do the things we used to be able to do with relative ease. Similarly, we don't always notice a shift in our mood and how that shift may be affecting our overall well-being. The cause for these changes can be various stressors in our lives. With psychotherapy, we can begin to understand how these factors are impacting you and can we can help you better manage.

We would work well together if you are someone who is ready, open, and willing to do the "hard work" to make changes in whatever realm you want. To be able to face the brutal truths about your life and how things got to be the way they are is not a process for the faint of heart. How I work? I focus on the "whole being" by addressing inner and outer worlds, the mind, the heart, as well as the body. I encourage you, for whatever reasons you have to seek therapy, to allow yourself the time to finding both a good fit with a therapist and an approach to therapy that feels helpful to you.

Has your teen felt lost or hopeless? Does your child suffer from excessive worry that interferes with social and academic life? Children and teens are particularly susceptible to the pressure handed out by society and often need help developing the tools to cope with intense symptoms of anxiety and depression. Working as a team, I will help you, your child, and any other providers create and plan ways to achieve goals of decreasing symptoms such as intense worry, insomnia, mood swings, panic attacks, school problems, and suicidal thoughts. I also run two teen groups focused on symptom management and building self confidence.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
