I believe that many of the struggles we experience are caused by responding to new life circumstances using past life experiences. Although our earlier experiences offer a valuable perspective when dealing with new life circumstances this often causes us to feel stuck and can lead to disappointment and emotional distress. During therapy I work with clients collaboratively to introduce perspectives beyond the past in an effort to bring focus to the present. Through this work, clients can alleviate this "stuck” feeling and move toward leading fulfilling lives.

Taking the initial step to seek therapy can bring a roller coaster of emotions and even hesitation. It's ok - you are not alone. The fact you made it to this sentence is an amazing first step. Welcome! Everyone is different with different needs, and I believe in tailoring my modalities based on my client's specific goals. This is about you and what you need.

Have you been struggling to find a safe place to share your experience and feelings? Approaching change can be a vulnerable process, finding someone to engage in that process with can be even harder. I am here to walk along side you as you explore your experience with shame, trauma, perfectionism, abuse, anxiety, depression, identity, parenting, sexuality, attention and concentration difficulties, relationship challenges, grief, and your emotional experience. I aim to do so while maintaining my own cultural competency and acknowledging the larger systems of power and oppression within our society and their impact on our experience.

I believe that we all have an inherent need to feel connected, seen, and understood and that is often where the growth, relief, and healing begins. My clinical work is based on a dynamic and relational approach that works collaboratively with clients to gain an understanding of how early experiences underlie behaviors, thoughts, feelings, and explore ways to connect with others. My approach is grounded in a social justice, sex-positive, and anti-oppressive lens, that posits an understanding of how systems of power and privilege manifest in individuals’ lives and impact individuals' ability to heal.

Could you believe there may be another way to look at your experiences and ideas about yourself and your life? Maybe you're new to therapy and ready to try a different approach. Or maybe therapy has been helpful to you in the past and you're looking for a tune up. As uncertain that first step may seem, with the right fit it may open up possibilities for you and set you on a new path.

I have a deep gratitude for all the patients I've known whose lives have been transformed. That's what makes it all worthwhile. My approach to psychotherapy is collaborative. We work together and as soon as I have a realization that I think can help you I will share it with you so we can use it to move forward. We draw from creativity, science, spirit and all of our mutual resources to succeed. Speaking about yourself opens up new pathways in your mind. Progress and change can then happen at any age and I'm there to see that it does.

I am gender-affirming, sex positive, and believe in body liberation/health at every size (HAES). I am especially passionate about working with LGBTQIA+, non-monogamous, kinky, and neurodivergent folks. As a chronically ill person myself, I love helping folks to manage chronic illness/pain and self-advocate within healthcare systems. My areas of focus include helping people to build self-esteem and self-efficacy, to build tools to navigate neurodivergence in adulthood, and to identify core beliefs and needs so that they can live life more authentically.

As a queer Black person who has done their own healing work, it became my mission to establish the therapeutic space I provide as trauma-informed. As such, I strive toward building a fundamental anti-oppressive space, one where your intersectionalities are respected and your healing is centered. Bringing these intentions to the space I provide makes doing the work that healing requires that much more possible for the communities I serve.

I work with adults (18+) seeking a deeper understanding of themselves. I'm comfortable working with various issues such as relationship concerns, anxiety, depression, trauma, and grief and loss. It's effective to work with people who want to explore the underlying causes of their struggles and gain insights into their patterns. Typically, patients value a supportive space to express themselves without judgment. Loss and mourning are an area of expertise where I help individuals navigate grief and rebuild their lives. I aim to provide a compassionate environment where patients can discover themselves, grow, and find healing.

Many people seek therapy upon realizing that familiar ways of thinking, feeling, behaving, and relating to others have become unhelpful or even stifling. Maybe it’s difficult to sustain meaningful relationships, to confront anxiety-provoking situations, or to cultivate a positive, valued sense of yourself. Maybe you neglect yourself, play out self-defeating patterns, or invalidate your own feelings. There are innumerable ways that emotional pain shows up in our lives. However, it can be difficult to identify, confront, and work through this on your own, or to make changes that allow you to thrive.

I am currently accepting virtual-therapy clients from Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin. The decision to seek therapy is a very important decision, but choosing the right therapist is even more important since one of the best predictors of a positive therapy outcome is the fit between client and therapist. I strive to provide the people with whom I work an environment that is comfortable, nonjudgmental, and genuinely validating. My job is to provide a space for you to access your strengths and attributes, and with this I can provide psychological approaches to help you address the concerns that brought you in for therapy.

I believe that therapy can be about much more than just healing from or diving into the past. Therapy is a journey to wellness and living one's best life. I view clients holistically to develop goals based on their own values, taking an eclectic, person-centered therapeutic approach that tailors treatment to each individual. I meet clients where they are at in a respectful, judgment-free and safe setting, applying mindfulness as well as cognitive behavioral, humanistic, and existential therapies. I work with sex positivity, open marriages, polyamory, kinks, and sex work with clients of all genders and sexual persuasions.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Chicago?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
