I usually find that clients managing anxiety, depression, loss and/or addiction are first looking for a compassionate listener with the experience and knowledge that facilitates emerging inner strength. My approach is compassionate, non-judgmental and professional. Frequently my clients have issues with drugs or alcohol and I may work also with their partners, family, or concerned friends. I feel it is critical for everyone involved to know that they are not alone in their struggles, that support and guidance are available and that therapy has helped people feel better than they thought possible.
Addiction is so widespread that much of my work centers around this. My work in theology at Yale Divinity School, and counseling at Antioch Graduate School have lead to "unconditional positive regard" for every person I work with. We are all in this together and are connected.
Spirituality. It means different things to different people. And it is a very interesting topic to bring into therapy.
