Students were diagnosed with Emotional Behavior Disorder, as well as a dual mental health diagnosis.
I have been working as a therapist with children, teens, adults, couples and families since I received a Masters of Clinical Social Work from University of Saint Thomas/Saint Catherine University in 2017. I enjoy working with individuals ages 12 through adult. I believe in the importance of the therapeutic relationship with my clients, as well as their life experiences, to meet clients where they are at and encourage growth and movement through their journey.

I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental atmosphere for clients to explore their relationships, values, strengths, and changes they would like to make. I strongly believe that everyone is capable of persevering through life's challenges and making positive change, if given the proper tools and resources. I emphasize building upon underlying resilience I believe every person has, through education, skills, and evidence-based approaches. I am a direct communicator but have a casual approach, emphasize compassion, and appreciate humor in sessions.

I currently work with individuals, partners, and families. My area of passion and expertise is gender and sexuality. I also view therapy and self-care as an act of resistance and believe it can help individuals with marginalized identities cope with minority stress and systemic oppression. I am currently seeing clients in office and virtually if you live in MN. I work with almost all mental health diagnoses including anxiety, depression, panic disorders, PTSD/CPTSD, bipolar, personality disorders, DID, and schizophrenia/delusional disorders. I also have specialized experience in substance use and eating disorders.

Specializing in behavioral therapy, I focus with clients to reduce or cease destructive or ineffective behaviors and increase effective behaviors that are consistent with the client's values and goals.
Life is hard, sometimes! Therapy provides you with that extra support as well as the opportunity to grow, evolve and learn new ways to cope with life's challenges. I believe the trust and rapport built between a client and therapist forms the foundation of all progress made in therapy. This relationship supports increasing awareness of the present, identifying what is no longer working, setting long term goals and taking small steps toward those goals. Building a life based in vitality, hope and an increased capacity for joy rather than one filled with suffering, avoidance and futility.

I use a variety of different approaches, often incorporating aspects or cognitive behavioral therapy, solutions focused brief therapy, or process-focused therapy, but always tailor sessions to each client.
I am passionate about helping people see the best in themselves, even during the most challenging circumstances. Sometimes this includes processing what is going on around you, sometimes this means exploring aspects of your past that have led to patterns of behavior, and sometimes this means making sense of a hectic society that can seem a little senseless. I am especially keen to work with clients who want to explore aspects of their own identity, whether it be where they came from, their family, their racial or ethnic background, their sexual orientation or gender, and/or diverse relationships.

As a National Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner and Behavioral Health Specialist licensed in SC, MN, and CO with twenty years of success in clinical practice, I am passionate about providing care that honors the uniqueness of one's life experience and aligns with the body's innate drive toward well-being.
My ideal client recognizes the interdependence of body, mind, and spirit. They know that mental health influences physical health, and the reverse is also true. For example, sometimes depression is not just a mood disturbance, but it can also be a symptom of hormonal imbalance, or perhaps an under-functioning thyroid gland. My clients appreciate an integrative and holistic approach to wellness that respects their intelligence and honors their values. They feel supported with compassionate, relationship-based care and empowered with accurate health information and guidance.

Behavioral Issues Therapists

What happens in therapy for behavioral issues?

No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behavior issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.

What therapy types help with behavioral issues?

Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.

How long does therapy last for behavioral issues?

Among popular approaches to treating behavioral concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behavior management, often used when the underlying cause of behavior issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioral issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.

How effective is therapy for behavior issues?

Studies show that therapy for behavior issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behavior later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behavior. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
