Evans realized years ago that the more a person knows about him or herself, the more control that individual will have over his or her thoughts, emotions and behavior, and he emphasizes self-understanding to drastically increase self-awareness – the holy grail for personal change.
John B. Evans, PhD, LCSW, is dedicated to working with individuals, couples, and families via tele-therapy to help with multiple life issues. Dr. Evans has found tele-therapy to be very effective in almost all cases. With 35 years of experience, Dr. Evans will provide you with expert guidance in dealing with current problems you may not understand and help figure out what may be going on under the surface. Many people have found they make more and faster progress in therapy with Dr. Evans than they have experienced in past therapy. Dr. Evans does not try to keep clients in therapy longer than necessary although he is a big believer

I approach therapy with a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) lens and a psycho-dynamic perspective.
Have you struggled with feeling out of place? Feeling lost or overwhelmed with your day-to-day? Never feeling like your trauma or past adverse experiences lets you breathe? I would love the opportunity to chat and work with anyone that is ready to address traumas, pain, or suffering they're currently experiencing. I believe that everyone deserves to thrive, but sometimes we need some support and help getting there. I have particular interest in helping with navigating masculinity, intersectionality, identify development, self-worth, and distress tolerance.

My practice draws from cognitive, behavioral, trauma-informed and mindfulness-based practices.
Life can be both amazing and terrible. We all experience success and failure, love and loss, moments of bliss and moments of darkness and despair. The inconvenient truth is that almost everything that makes our life rich, full, and meaningful comes with a painful downside. Whatever a persons challenges or difficulties are in life, my work is dedicated to helping them reach their potential and build psychological flexibility. I have extensive experience working with children and adolescents. I have expertise working with clients in the child welfare system, those with life changing events, physical disability and veterans.

My area of expertise is in helping others to explore their thoughts and "core beliefs" that might be impacting their behavior in current circumstances.
Congratulations on being brave enough to seek therapy or coaching! I know it can be an intimidating process, but I strive to make it easier for you. I am currently accepting individual clients who may be struggling with relationship and/or job issues, or growing awareness about who they are. I am also accepting couples who are seeking a direct approach to therapy either to repair or enhance their relationship. I would be happy to further discuss my style in a consultative call.

I counsel individuals who have experienced trauma, anxiety, depression, life changes, who desire more fulfilling relationships, and who want to work through behavior patterns that are getting in the way of finding happiness.
I believe that we all do what we know based on what we have learned, beliefs we have adopted, and/or experiences we have been through. It is my belief that once we become aware of the patterns we have created in our lives, we can then consciously decide to change situations that we are not satisfied with. In order to heal I believe it is important to empower individuals to tell their stories while feeling every emotion without judgment.

Behavioral Issues Therapists

What happens in therapy for behavioral issues?

No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behavior issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.

What therapy types help with behavioral issues?

Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.

How long does therapy last for behavioral issues?

Among popular approaches to treating behavioral concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behavior management, often used when the underlying cause of behavior issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioral issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.

How effective is therapy for behavior issues?

Studies show that therapy for behavior issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behavior later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behavior. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
