There are times it feels like nothing can go right in your life. You feel like the stress of day to day life is more than you can handle. It would feel so much better if the clouds would lift and things would just go your way. You try so hard to appear as if you have it all together, but trying to juggle hiding your struggles is too much. There are a million thoughts playing in your head and you feel like no one understands.

I work from an integrative perspective, drawing from psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, and humanistic theories.
I believe that the first step in effecting positive change in your life begins with building self-awareness. So often, avoiding issues is the easier and more attractive option, but I firmly believe that ignorance is not bliss. As a therapist, my job is to provide a safe and judgement-free space for you to learn more about yourself in order to attain sustainable change. If you are experiencing things like issues in your relationships, loneliness, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, low self-esteem -- I can help you.

Counseling serves many purposes. It's a safe place to process current and past events. It's an opportunity to learn new skills that will help you cope with distressing emotions or to function better in relationships and other important areas of your life. It's a place to make sense of things and to find meaning and value in life. In short, it is designed to make your life better.

We've all heard the expression life is a journey.  But what about when the journey is confusing & complicated?  Or just downright messy. I believe counseling is like a roadmap- and I recognize that faith is an integral part of that roadmap.  I’d like to help you find your way forward.  I combine faith based practices along with other counseling strategies including: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for an effective approach to working through and healing life's challenging seasons.

I offer Christian counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy, grief counseling and dialectical therapy in a non-judgmental, warm environment.
Sometimes it's hard getting out of bed, eating a meal or maybe overeating, going to sleep or maybe sleeping too much, it happens to 1 in 5 people, these are common symptoms of depression. Did you know that many people who have depression also have anxiety? Is it hard to stay focused on tasks? Is worry common every day to you? Do you feel out of control when you can't control? More than 40 million people in the US, age 18 and older, suffer from anxiety, but only a few ask for help to this highly treatable condition. None of us are perfect, my approach is one of encouragement and empowerment to live life to the fullest potential.

I look forward to working with clients who are interested in making changes in their lives so they can grow and feel confident in handling any stressors that come along. I have found that with an objective counselor, who is supportive and allows the client to share and work through his/her feelings, they can realize their strength to make the changes needed to improve their lives. My career has spanned over 25 years, working with clients with depression, anxiety, grief, life stressors, medical crises, military service members, and children with ADHD, behavioral issues and custody issues.

Behavioral Issues Therapists

What happens in therapy for behavioral issues?

No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behavior issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.

What therapy types help with behavioral issues?

Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.

How long does therapy last for behavioral issues?

Among popular approaches to treating behavioral concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behavior management, often used when the underlying cause of behavior issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioral issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.

How effective is therapy for behavior issues?

Studies show that therapy for behavior issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behavior later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behavior. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
