I am certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and utilize Motivational Interviewing in my work with clients.
In my practice I work with both teens and adults ages 13 and up, and I particularly enjoy working with teen girls and young women on issues such as self-esteem and body image, school and familial struggles, trauma, and anxiety. I am also a mom to a toddler and love working with new mothers on the unique challenges, experiences, and joys that come with motherhood. I work best with clients who are motivated, open, and engaged in the therapeutic process.

In my work with clients (ages 5 to adult) I use motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy.
Hi, I'm Ryan and am currently accepting new clients for individual counseling. I'd love to connect with you and be of assistance in addressing such issues as: trauma history, identity, grief and loss, depression, anxiety, spirituality, and life transitions. I love supporting people who have been impacted by adoption and those who struggle with addiction. I can help you understand the "why" behind your thoughts, attitudes, and actions, and how getting below the surface to the root is the key to healing and growth.

I graduated from Western Washington University and completed my graduate degree in Applied Behavioral Science, at Bastyr University, Seattle.
As a LMFT I have worked over the past 15 years extensively with adults and adolescents experiencing traumas. Trauma can spill over onto family systems, causing pain and suffering to those we love and who love us. Whether our focus together is healing past traumas, unhappiness in relationships, or finding a way to navigate bringing together a new family system - lets start. I strongly believe in the ability of people to heal, grow, and improve their lives within a safe therapeutic environment, to explore their feelings and experiences. I would be honored to be the person you choose to help the healing begin.

I have a very pragmatic approach to counseling and enjoy using cognitive theories of counseling to help my clients challenge problems in thinking and behavior.
Ultimately, addiction is a distraction from life's meaning and purpose. My primary focus is seeing my client connect to their own meaning and purpose--not only in recovery but life generally. Through these re-connections one can forge a prolonged and stable sense of progress that paves the way toward whatever goal is on the horizon. I do not believe I am in the business of ‘fixing’ anyone, instead supporting people as they realize their own potential to overcome whatever challenges are preventing them from living the life they deserve.

I cannot promise that your circumstances or behavior will change.
We are born into lives that are not our choosing. Our parents, circumstances, and impactful events can define us and become the narrative of our lives. You may have reached a place where you would like to examine this, to decide who and how you want to be in the world, to align your values, interests and passions with how you live each day. Coping skills learned at a young age may no longer be serving you, and it may be time to learn new skills to support your growth and wellbeing. Together we can explore how you got here, and develop a pathway to connect with your true self.

I practice strength-based and evidence-based psychotherapy with a variety of modalities including Positive Psychology, Dialectical Behavior (DBT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in sessions.
I provide psychotherapy to all age clients including children (5+), family, and elderly. I speak Cantonese and Taishanese fluently. Image, you have your freedom and trust yourself to be who you want to be and live the life that you want to live. You are trapped, stuck, and carry heavy invisible responsibilities from your background, culture, tradition, and expectations from your society. You feel like you cannot breathe, keep your head above water. That’s enough! It’s time to change, it’s time to live life with the happiness that you deserve.

Two methods I often find useful are cognitive-behavioral and interpersonal psychotherapy.
I work with adults striving to respond with integrity and effectiveness to many life issues--particularly related to work, career, relationship, and mid-life challenges. My clients include adults dealing with depression, anxiety, performance impairment, stress-related conditions, as well as those choosing to "raise their game." Regardless of their reason for seeking therapy, many of my clients bring important resources rooted in their personal journey of faith or search for meaning. If spiritual aspects of your life are important, I invite you to share that in our work together.

My role as a therapist is to listen, diagnose, and present coping skills and therapeutic techniques. You will be asked to apply these skills to the best of your ability, giving you hope for an improved quality of life. The therapy model I use is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). You will be encouraged to take an active part in your treatment plan. Honesty, trust, patience, and committment are the basics for building a therapeutic relationship with positive results. I will provide a referral counselor for you, if I do not have the expertise for your particular issue.

Therapy is creative, gives us focus, loosens the grip of our problems, spins us around, and lifts us up. I have practiced psychology for about 30 years and presently have offices in Bellingham and Renton, WA and Vancouver, BC. I have just opened the office in Bellingham and welcome new clients. I look forward to having the same engaging relationships in Bellingham that I have with clients in the other busy practices. I work eclectically, using methods that personally benefit whoever has come for therapy. Usually there is some aspect of Cognitive Behavioral therapy, because it is so helpful.

My experience and training includes working with adolescents, adults, families, and couples to change unwanted behavioral or thought patterns that contribute to undesired outcomes and challenges.
Choosing to explore therapy can elicit a number of emotional responses. For some, this is an important step in recognizing an issue and deciding to move toward resolve. Others may experience a lack of clarity in regards to what exactly needs to change and uncertainty about entering therapy. No matter where you are in your healing, I offer a safe and personal therapeutic process to fit your specific needs. My goal is to work toward your desired outcome by offering a collaborative and supportive exploration of your concerns while utilizing an integrative style of therapeutic modalities that are all firmly established through research.

Behavioral Issues Therapists

What happens in therapy for behavioral issues?

No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behavior issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.

What therapy types help with behavioral issues?

Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.

How long does therapy last for behavioral issues?

Among popular approaches to treating behavioral concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behavior management, often used when the underlying cause of behavior issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioral issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.

How effective is therapy for behavior issues?

Studies show that therapy for behavior issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behavior later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behavior. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
