Most include the desire to improve their quality of life and to address mood or anxiety issues, couples issues, behavioral issues, loss, trauma, anger management and others.
Finding a therapist and feeling comfortable with that person is a very important aspect of getting started. I like to think of therapy as a conversation at the same time knowing that you have goals for your life that will be the focus of our work. I take a very humanistic and interpersonal approach to my practice, which seems to put people at ease.

What is unique about my practice is how I approach each client -- examining the cognitive processes underlying behavior, and developing exercises to effect the processing that leads to change in behavior.
My book "Uniquely Normal: Tapping the Reservoir of Normalcy to Treat Autism," won 5 awards, including the categories of "Psychology/Mental Health" and "Parenting and Family." The foreword is written by Temple Grandin. It has 27 case stories of people on the spectrum significantly improving. I start with an evaluation of the person's cognitive processes. I then develop an interactive therapeutic plan to affect the processing underlying the individual's behavior. My passions are getting children to speak for the first time and working with Asperger's young adults in establishing healthy relationships. I have also helped those not on the autism spectrum, to establish a healthy, romantic relationship. For children, I work with the school, including establishing the best placement and educational environment.

I view my therapeutic role as a partnership in which I listen carefully and guide the conversation so that I can "hear" underlying themes and connections I can then share with the client as we work toward resolving their difficulties. In providing information related to the client's concerns, my work is still psychodynamically informed. This is especially important for clients interested in learning about themselves and their relationships in a new way (their feelings, anxiety, causes of symptoms, or errors in judgment) in order to free themselves from the misunderstandings, confusion, and emotional "clutter" holding them back.

As a therapist, I start with the basic assumption that we all have a fundamental impulse for growth and well-being. Sometimes we need resources, guidance, and someone with expertise to rediscover this. In my practice I am looking to engage clients to gain insight, discover motivation, and hone emotional skills. I am interested in providing the most conducive setting for people to cultivate their innate creativity, intelligence, and courage in navigating anxiety, depression, and the range life’s challenges.

I listen empathically to help my patients develop self-compassion and awareness so they can develop acceptance and create change. I see my role as listener, supporter, and guide into the internal world. My job is to thoughtfully explore with you, this unknown terrain and come to know the resources, resiliency, and best self that already exists. I also believe that life is not all rainbows and unicorns. There are many up and downs. The question is how we get through them. We must explore all aspects of life to fully engage and fulfill our greatest potentials.

Behavioral Issues Therapists

What happens in therapy for behavioral issues?

No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behavior issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.

What therapy types help with behavioral issues?

Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.

How long does therapy last for behavioral issues?

Among popular approaches to treating behavioral concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behavior management, often used when the underlying cause of behavior issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioral issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.

How effective is therapy for behavior issues?

Studies show that therapy for behavior issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behavior later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behavior. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
