Facing difficult emotional and interpersonal challenges in our lives can be frightening but can also be a time for growth and healing. Talking with someone who listens without judgment, understands your concerns, and helps you clarify issues can be invaluable. I am a culturally competent therapist with experience working with various populations including, the LGBTQ community, adolescents, adults, couples, veterans, and those suffering from chronic illness. My therapeutic approach is solution-focused and strength-based, faith/spirituality can be incorporated into treatment as well.

Did you recently suffer a breakup in a relationship? Are you forever choosing wrong partners? How are your relationships in general, even if they are not romantic? Are you suicidal, angry, depressed, anxious, worried, suffering from past trauma you cannot shake? Are you repeatedly struggling with addiction? Are you questioning your sexual orientation? Are seeking acceptance? Is your self-esteem suffering? Do you struggle from religious abuse? So many issues can overwhelm us, but there is ALWAYS a positive solution.

In the 20+ years I've worked in the helping profession, I've been honored to walk with many individuals on their personal paths of self discovery. Bearing witness to their journeys has inspired me on my own path, both professionally and personally. I have found my interest concentrated on Human Sexuality. My intention is to provide an open and safe environment for individuals to explore concerns and questions related to aspects of their sexuality and gender expression. By exploring how this impacts one's personal experience, close relationships and lives, insight can be gained and self esteem improved. Areas of focus include:

In a world where we are constantly experiencing trauma, both directly and indirectly, it can be difficult to identify how deeply different things in life affect us. I believe that the experience of feeling understood can be the catalyst for change and something that allows for healing to begin. I aim to provide a space of healing, openness and exploration for those things that you might otherwise suppress or carry with heaviness or judgment. Together, we can heal that unresolved stuff from the past and create skills to support you through future circumstances.

I use strengths based, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness and art therapy techniques to build coping skills, self esteem, and awareness of needs and how to communicate them.
The mind can be a beautiful yet intricately tangled realm. It is my passion to help clients unravel their core thoughts and emotions impacting their day to day lives. Whether it is delving into the stressors of work and school, strengthening relationships with loved ones and peers, or simply finding one's strengths and goals for their own happiness. I also co-facilitate two therapy groups. Saturdays at 10am we host a teenage girls group and the first Tuesdays of the month at 6pm a young women's empowerment group.

Seeking help to deal with issues in your life takes lots of courage. I respect that greatly. Often the first step of committing to counseling is the biggest hurdle. Whether it's relationship problems, coping with loss or transitions, anxiety, depression, self esteem concerns, there are times when professional assistance can really help. Sometimes counseling goals are accomplished quickly and other times there is a need for longer term and deeper work. I have the training and expertise to do both.

Throughout our clinical experience at Better Lives Building Tribes (BLBT), we have learned that people are learning the most about themselves through their interactions with other people. But interactions with other people are complicated and people often need help navigating conflict, conflict resolution, and setting boundaries amidst already struggling self-esteem and self-worth. How we feel about ourselves has everything to do with our ability to defend ourselves, verbalize our own needs, and come up with creative solutions to our interpersonal hurdles. If you find yourself having difficulties with others, we are here to help.

Self Esteem Therapists

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
