My ideal client would be any person that is in need of someone to talk to. They want to feel heard and understood. They have an idea of what they would like to talk about and what they would to see for their own future. Even if they are one hundred percent sure what they want, they are willing to talk about it. Also I think that it is important to be open to the idea that therapy can be fun!

Hello! I’m Marissa Watkins, LCSW. I’m a therapist in Arizona and I work primarily with adults who have experienced trauma and/or are struggling with depression and anxiety. I’m also passionate about perinatal mental health. My therapy style is influenced by attachment theory, trauma-informed care, interpersonal neurobiology, and mindfulness. The quality of fit between a client and therapist is the most important factor in whether therapy will be helpful. As your therapist, I will seek to understand you and your perspective and create space in which you feel safe to be vulnerable.

Coping with the effects of a traumatic experience is like battling through a stream of thick mud, making you feel helpless and unsafe. On the outside, you may appear fine, but on the inside, there is something dark and sad sitting just below the surface. The irritability, lack of connection to others and yourself, disinterest in the things you used to enjoy, and difficulty sleeping are enough to make you feel like there’s no end in sight. Perhaps you’ve turned to substances or other behaviors as a way to cope since nothing else seems to work.

I am a licensed professional counselor (LPC) with the Board of Behavioral Health Examiners in the state of Arizona. I vow to offer a safe space for you to share, be, and feel seen. I am person-centered and usually say that I have a trauma lens. Meaning, oftentimes we go through some hard stuff and may appear okay to the naked eye, but inside there's so much anxiety and depression. My goal is to help you understand yourself, to normalize what you are experiencing, and to join you on a path to healing. There is life after trauma. Allow me to help you see that!
