Childhood abuse, attachment struggles, codependency, and dysfunctional family systems can leave us hurt and guarded, but we can overcome these wounds.
Your story is safe with me. It takes courage to face your past. I just want to say that I admire your courage, welcome your voice and your story. We will shed the layers of shame and a new freedom will come into existence. You will truly come to believe "I am a new creation."

I would help the client learn and understand codependency as well as cognitive distortions.
An adult seeking counseling for irritability, anxiety, and low self-esteem. The individual resides with their children and has a history of growing up in a household with frequent parental conflict and a lack of support for school activities. They have been diagnosed with generalized anxiety and were prescribed medication but discontinued use due to concerns about side effects.  Their goal is to manage anxiety symptoms and avoid comparing their current relationship to past experiences.

Using a straight forward, respectful, non-blaming approach to counseling, my specialities include OCD, recovery from narcissistic abuse, life transitions, sexuality, grief/loss, co-dependency, ADHD, RSD, self esteem, body image, gender expression, anxiety, depression, codependency recovery, and family of origin issues.
My approach examines cultural and social narratives as they relate to beliefs about ourselves and our place in the world. Deconstructing social myths can often lead to self acceptance and healing. I take into consideration the ways oppressive systems impact mental health.

I work with clients and couples dealing with reoccurring problems of all kinds such as pornography, sexual issues, substance abuse, self-harming, codependency, poor communication, anxiety, etc.
Have you been struggling with the same problems, thoughts, or feelings for weeks, months, or even years and can't seem to get them under control? Are your intimate, social, and work relationships being affected by the reoccurring problems and thoughts? It's very frustrating when your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are not in line with your values and who you want to be. You know that if you could just learn to let go of the past and focus on the present, then your life and relationships will improve; but you just don't know how. Is there hope?

I help warmhearted people who worry about their relationships—caring people whose lives get thrown off balance by prioritizing other people’s needs. You’re in the right place if: you get anxious and insecure in relationships and worry about being rejected and abandoned. You’re a people pleaser—you have a hard time saying “no,” setting boundaries, and asking for what you need. You’re a caretaker—you make yourself responsible for solving other people’s problems. You feel exhausted and resentful, but you avoid conflict and difficult conversations. And, you often end up in relationships and work situations that drain your energy.

Codependency Therapists

What therapy types help with codependency problems?

Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?

Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?

Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?

One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
