Now offering EMDR and EMDR Intensives in Michigan and Arizona.
You just want to be seen – AND loved – for who you really are, not the mask you wear every day. The mask feels heavy. Exhausting. But, somewhere inside, you know it doesn't have to be this way. That's why you're here. You're looking for someone you can trust enough to drop the pretense and learn how to live with courage and connection.

My varied interests have motivated me to pursue training in understanding the nervous system, Somatic Experiencing, trauma ( EMDR trained), play therapy techniques, perinatal mental health (certified by PSI), as well as training in the Gottman Method for relationships and Sex Therapy.
Life doesn't always go the way we envisioned it would. Sometimes we can handle life's curveballs, but sometimes we need some guidance to do so. Whether relationships aren't going well, work or school isn't enjoyable and fulfilling, you feel different or overwhelmed after a new baby, something inside of you doesn't feel quite right, or you just want to discover who you are, I can support and guide you through the obstacles keeping you from living the life you want. I can help with a wide range of issues like trauma, anxiety, stress, career/school pressures, family/relationship problems, affairs, communication issues, and many more.

I’m Susan, an EMDR therapist and Certified Imago Relationship Therapist with 33+ years of experience.
I believe our greatest joy — and often our deepest pain — grows out of our relationships. When communication feels strained, when conflict keeps repeating, or when old wounds quietly resurface, it can leave you feeling disconnected, misunderstood, or alone. These patterns can feel discouraging, but they are also deeply workable.

When life isn’t what you thought it would be and you experience problems in your relationships with your partner, children, co-workers, extended family members; or perhaps you have problems dealing with past family issues, or have experienced a recent or past trauma. As a result you may be feeling depressed, anxious, have difficulty sleeping, experiencing mood changes, have angry outbursts or perhaps you’re drinking a little too much, eating too much or too little. Events in life shape a person’s belief system which can effect their perception of themselves and those around them.

I integrate CBT, IFS, Somatic practices, EFCT, the Gottman Method, Attachment Theory, and mindfulness-based approaches that cultivate awareness, resilience, and inner calm, and I am in the process of obtaining EMDR training to expand my offerings.
Trauma leaves echoes in our bodies and our relationships, yet within those echoes lives the possibility of repair and deeper connection. When the past shows up in the present, it can feel like love, safety, or even a sense of self gets lost in the noise of triggers, misunderstandings, or distance. I work with both individuals and couples who carry trauma. I help partners move from patterns of survival into trust and intimacy, and support individuals in finding relief from anxiety, depression, and the weight of old wounds. Together, we can pause and make room for new ways of connecting.

Who is EMDR for?
EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?
People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?
First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?
First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
