that same therapy has been helpful for those struggling with
sexual abuse
, physical abuse, and other trauma.
As a psychotherapist, I am inspired by my clients who come to therapy wondering if life can improve, just to find that there is healing of wounds. They realize that they too can elevate their life. I value being an open, understanding, and compassionate person who puts the clients needs and desires first. Clients working with me feel safe in being raw about their feelings and thoughts, knowing that our therapy is a place of acceptance and curiosity, and not a place of judgement. I have a strong belief that no matter how severe the symptoms or how immense the problem there are ways to heal, improve, and move toward a successful life.

At some time or another we may need help to understand ourselves, our thoughts and our actions. During these times we need a professional to help process and work through overwhelming thoughts and feelings that may be confusing or disorienting. When looking for someone to help, seek those who are uniquely qualified to work with your specific issues. I am uniquely qualified to work with children, adolescents and adults who have experienced various forms of Trauma. Some of the most common symptoms associated with trauma are: emotion dysregulation, anxiety, panic, nightmares, flashbacks, irritability, and lack of focus.

Therapy can help us gain a better understanding of ourselves, our thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and develop new skills and strategies to cope with life's challenges. Sometimes it's a slow realization that what worked in the past isn't cutting it anymore. Other times, it's a sudden, painful event that leaves us feeling unmoored. Maybe it's been a long-running sense that our experiences or emotions are just different from the people around us. In therapy, we work together to find a new path so that you can feel grounded, happier, and more confident.

Sometime life gets crazy. Sometime, despite all our efforts, what we're doing to cope with a difficult situation just doesn't seem to be enough. If you're at that point, I may be able to help. My style in therapy is practical, goal-oriented, solution-focused and strength-based. I endeavor to use your strengths and bolster them to help you get to the place you want to be. I can also teach you new coping skills and techniques that will be successful across different situations and environments. I believe that people have the innate power to positively change the course of their lives with a supportive environment. When you are in a challenging situation, you naturally feel ambivalence about change since it requires letting go of the familiar for something unknown. If you're looking for extra support and guidance to get through a challenging situation or you're just ready to move in a new direction in your life, I look forward to working with you.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
