There are times in all of our lives when problems arise. Some are easily managed and others are not. Individual therapy involves working on a one-on-one basis with a therapist to plan and to create positive changes in your life. People come for therapy for a number of different reasons including treatment for depression, anxiety, relationship struggles, dissatisfaction with life, alcohol abuse, resolving past trauma, feelings of emptiness, abuse and stress management. Additionally, ongoing therapy is a common and useful means for self-growth. The research is clear; the benefits of therapy outweigh the risks!

I believe that the most effective treatment is found in a strong therapeutic relationship .
We all are given a life to live and wish for it to be without challenges and obstacles, and yet sometimes unpleasant events can happen unexpectedly that could change our world upside down. I want you to know that no life events are trivial, and trauma can come in different forms. I value my relationships with clients and listen without judgment, offer empathy and compassion, and provide a safe place for clients to be vulnerable.

Expect a caring and energetic creative therapist, who utilizes science and humor to help you, help yourself! My ideal Clients are children, adolescents and adults ages 4-50 who may be full of energy, creativity, loudness, craziness, sadness, and even madness.

Whether I am working with a small child or an adult, I believe that the healing process is a journey of returning home to the authentic self with the therapeutic relationship as a vehicle supporting the exploration. My name is Kayla and I hope to walk along with you on this path, offering compassion, co-regulation, and some neuroscience education along the way. When we can lean into the understanding of our own neurobiology and how our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors have come to be, we may also begin to explore where we may have gotten stuck and how we can have a renewed access to the wisdom and assets that our bodies possess.

I focus on relationship dynamics, helping clients identify and understand patterns that developed during our formative years and how those patterns may hinder or even harm our current relationships.
Relationships are crucial for our survival and mental well-being. Without proper support life becomes challenging and difficult to navigate, often resulting in experiences of stress, depression, or anxiety. We may find ourselves recreating relationship dynamics that we learned in childhood; from parents, care-givers, friends, and important relationships. We may be frustrated as to why and how these patterns play out again and again throughout life, but are uncertain as to how to make changes to break the cycle.

Regardless of what's on your mind, from relationship issues, to job stress, addiction, generalized anxiety, to just about anything else, I am confident we can work together to find that next big breakthrough!.
We all have challenges. Admittedly some are objectively harder than others but our own challenges are unique to each of us and can seem devastating from our perspective. I would like to help you work through yours. I am not going to give you platitudes. Instead, I want to help you learn to accept, cope, cry if you need to, and then get back up! It’s not easy, but you can do hard things! As a college professor, and my background in medicine, my natural instinct is to make sure you understand both the biological and psychological reasons behind your troubles and then we work together to put YOU back in control of your life.

You may find a couples or family session, a stress relief session, or an expression based process that just brings your life into the clear focus you really want and need.
I know how hard it is to find an ally or someone to trust. As a therapist, my biggest asset is that I've been there, and I can lead people through the process that has transformed me. Whether it's feeling capable at school or at work, having confidence with friends and partners, or realizing that not everyone has had to dodge the same number of curve balls that you have, developing new patterns is both simple and one of the hardest things we can try to do. My method is designed to support the brain in bringing our inner wisdom to the things you, your family, or children really want to change.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
