I believe we are all born our true authentic selves but often life gets in the way! Our childhood experiences, day-to-day life, and relationships impact us along the way. I work with clients to sort through the clutter in our minds to understand the meaning. I love to help clients get “unstuck,” close the loop of past traumas, and stop the rumination.

Grief and trauma are uncertain and isolating experiences. At A Brighter Somewhere Counseling Services, I understand that sometimes it feels impossible to climb out of a dark place. Like a plant that grows on dark forest floors while reaching for the light, I believe in your capacity to heal and grow—even in the harshest conditions. My approach is rooted in the wisdom that growth doesn’t require light to begin; it requires connection, support, and the belief that something brighter is coming.
You don’t have to do this alone. Healing happens in connection, and support makes growth possible until you reach a brighter somewhere.

You can see that something is off with your teen, even if they can’t fully explain it themselves. The mood swings, the stress, the everyday challenges… you can tell they’re overwhelmed. Changes in friendships, family dynamics, academic pressure, and uncertainty about the future leave them unsteady and worn down. They want independence, yet they still need reassurance and guidance – and that tension makes them shut down and shut you out. You know they’re carrying more than they can handle, but it’s a struggle to find support they’ll actually trust, engage with, and feel safe opening up to without fear of judgment.

First off, thank you for being brave enough to take this first step in this journey! Navigating life at any age often brings challenges that are unpredictable, leaving a need of searching for belonging. I believe you deserve to feel confident in your inherent worth and that you belong—always. In the queer community, therapeutic supports are most important and vital for survival. Intersectionality can be beautiful but also lead to loneliness when there is a lack of similarity of your identity around you. As a queer woman of color and as a therapist, I understand the importance of having a space where you can be your truest self.

As a queer, person of color, I believe in creating a non-judgmental and culturally sensitive space to assist clients in creating a life that they love. Due to the pandemic, many of us have had more time for reflection than we might have had in the past. Maybe this time of reflection has caused you to question your identity, gender or sexuality. Exploring and integrating your gender or sexuality can feel overwhelming, especially in a world that can be hostile to LGBT/Queer people, but you do not have to do it alone. Seeking help takes courage. You are courageous.

You may be feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, identity questions, relationship stress, or the emotional impact of living with a chronic illness or disability. Many people come to therapy feeling discouraged by past experiences or burdened by the belief that something is “wrong” with them. You may carry heavy self-judgment and uncertainty about who you are, where you belong, or how to move forward. If therapy hasn’t felt like the right fit before, you might be unsure whether it can really help, and still be holding onto the hope that things could feel better. I see people in person in Sierra Vista and via telehealth anywhere in Arizona.

Transgender Therapists
As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?
A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.
What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?
Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.
How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?
An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.
How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?
Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
