Society’s rigid rules produce trauma not only when we experience disaster, but also when denied the opportunity to develop our identities. Whether LGBTQ+, neurodiverse, racial minority, or living with trauma or disease, we stumble through the world, learning to anticipate constant challenge and new ways to be hurt. When others speak of fond memories, we recall the effort we put into masking through it. When memories are too painful, we try to forget them – but they stay with us, hiding below our conscious mind where they wreak havoc on our bodies, creating chronic pain , addiction, mental illness and disease.

I believe that complex healing can arise from complex trauma, no matter the source of that pain .
Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Everyone. Yes, even you. Many of us are struggling to thrive in the world, dealing with unprecedented stress, oppression, and disconnection. I strive to offer hope to queer people, neurodivergent folks, and those living with painful trauma experiences. Let's honor your complexity, learn to heal your wounds through mindful self-compassion and find your aliveness again. I can help you root out self-shaming, and find love for yourself again. You deserve that, too.

Among other issues I treat are those who suffer with chronic pain , grief, and trauma, clients and their caregivers coping with Alzheimer's Disease.
After many years of my own psychotherapy with several different behavioral health practitioners, I am grateful for their reaching out to me with their intelligence, experience and empathy. The majority of my patients seeking psychotherapy complain and often exhibit signs of depression or anxiety, and often both. They often have difficulty throughout the day and night, having trouble concentrating with fatigue and poor short-term memory, with persistent eating issues, and hypersomnia and or insomnia, worsening their condition. My treatment techniques include psychodynamic therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution Focused.

For example, poor sleep can affect issues including chronic pain , depression, and anxiety, so CBT-I can help improve symptoms beyond sleep.
Obtaining optimal health lies in a balance of emotional and physical well-being. We can work together to develop tools to achieve your goals. I specialize in evidence based health psychology treatments that address the intersection of mental and physical health, such as depression, anxiety, chronic pain , perinatal depression, stress management, women's health, CPAP use, weight management, and coping with chronic medical conditions. I have extensive experience with sleep disorders, specifically cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) which is the front line treatment for sleep difficulty, and more effective than medications.

Specifically, those recovering and returning back to sport from injuries with focus on pain management and regaining confidence to perform at an elite level.
Daily stressors are inevitable and it is essential to build coping strategies for how to manage stress and combat negative thinking patterns. Creating behavior changes is a focal point of psychotherapy and beneficial in wanting to create a sense of structure and consistency in one's relationships and overall life. My overall goal for each client is to work on obtaining balance within a healthy lifestyle. Through obtaining balance one's symptoms can lessen and each individual and/or couple can focus on the positive attributes of their life and move forward towards reaching their goals and the life worth living.

My practice is unique. I treat two groups of clients: One is very high functioning - the highly successful professional who wants to improve personal strengths, interpersonal interactions, relationships, and intimacy. The second set are those who have been struggling with a diagnosable mental or physical illness that has not been effectively managed. Both may need various clinical treatments which include therapies such as Interpersonal Social Rhythm Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (Couples & Family), Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT) or trauma oriented skills such as Prolonged Exposure Therapy, Hypnosis, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) - Feeling-State Addiction Therapy, Relaxation & Mindfulness.

I teach skills and approaches which replace struggling to stop the pain of depression and anxiety.
I do well with individuals who are wanting more freedom and satisfaction in their lives. I know that most people do not know what to do or what is causing the pain in their lives. People need someone they feel comfortable with to assist them in identifying what is the cause of their suffering. I know how confusing and hopeless it can be to try to figure out what is wrong and how to "fix it". I provide a safe, comfortable environment where individuals can learn the skills necessary to transform patterns of confusion and suffering to peace and contentment.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
