Looking to maintain your sobriety and mental health or take the first steps towards it? I help individuals unsaddle the weight of addiction. If you’re still dragging the burden of addiction through your daily life—like a horse pulling a heavy plow—I’m here to help lighten that load. I work with people facing addiction and co-occurring mental health challenges, including tobacco dependence. With 7 years of hands-on experience, I offer real strategies that work. My approach is evidence-based, practical, and grounded in real life. I know what it’s like to feel stuck—and I know what it takes to break free, rebuild, and stay in recovery.

My name is Kevin Hassley, I am a Licensed Independent Addiction Counselor (LIAC). I have volunteered as a sober member of my community for over forty-three years. I have served as a professional counselor for nearly two decades. My personal experiences have led to one of my core beliefs: “It’s better to be reasonably comfortable with life’s unsolvable problems than it is to be right.” That is, if a person is reasonably comfortable, then damaging addictive behaviors rarely remain compulsive. Hence, the goal of each of my sessions is to help clients develop and maintain their own sober and reasonably comfortable lifestyle.

I work to provide my clients with insight, support, empathy, and purpose as they walk down the road of recovery by helping them make sense of their world and clean up their wreckage. Getting sober can be hard! Most people have very little to no understanding of why they use and all they do know is that their addiction is destroying their relationships, ruining their health, and hurting their stability and well-being in life. I can help you understand the underlying reasons why your addiction may be there and how to overcome and be free. I am very familiar with the challenges of getting sober and am here to help with your struggles!

Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with many individuals who come to therapy feeling unsettled or burdened by challenges in their lives—seeking a path toward healing and a better future, though sometimes uncertain of how to begin. Whether you are navigating depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, trauma, or addiction, I want you to know that your experience is met with understanding and compassion. My work is deeply rooted in trauma-informed and somatic practices—recognizing how pain and difficulties often arise not just in the mind, but also through the body and life’s experiences.

I consider myself to be half street and half academia. And I always ask the question, Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? Addiction is like a deep, dark hole that seemingly has no way out. This is my specialty and I am very skilled at it. I consider myself half "Street" and half academia. Please go to www.dieboldbehavioralcounseling.com for a more detailed biography. The healing begins with a phone call. It can be scary after we've been hurt and lost, but the way back home is always worth the effort. I'm always amazed at the courage of my clients.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
