Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists in Phoenix, AZ

I specialize ERP & ACT, which are evidenced based treatments for anxiety & OCD.
Many of my clients report constant uncertainty, panic, fears, an endless chase for the fleeting “good feeling”, rituals, checking, counting - it’s exhausting. The physical or mental compulsions almost always end with “Oh, crap, that didn’t feel right,” and OCD saying, “Better do it again!” The anxiety never seems to let up and they feel powerless, trapped between a rock and a hard place. And on top of all that, OCD has this way of targeting their deepest vulnerabilities, striking where it hurts the most. It’s a miserable cycle.

I integrate EFIT, EMDR, ACT, CBT, DBT, Mindfulness, Somatic Experiencing, Jungian, and existential to meet each person's unique history and needs.
Unhealed trauma or other painful childhood or adult experiences may disrupt our ability to connect well with our true self and with others and to achieve our deepest heart's desires. Strategies we needed to protect ourselves at one point in life, may be outworn, leaving us stuck with anxiety, depression, anger, or guilt, interfering with healthy relationships and experiencing joy. For over 20 years I have helped individuals and couples heal old wounds and grow past outworn patterns into greater freedom, joy, and deep connections. I offer myself as a compassionate witness to your pain and companion in your journey of personal growth.

Whether you are an experienced therapy client or scheduling therapy for the first time, I will meet you where you're at with acceptance and a gentle curiosity for the challenges leading you to seek support.
Hello, I'm Laura, and I help people take their lives back from fear and chronic self-doubt. If you're here, you might often feel like worry and doubt are controlling your life. You may feel the urge to perform certain rituals or behaviors to ease your distress, or perhaps you're caught in a mental tug-of-war, unable to decide. No amount of reassurance seems to ease your mind for long. Your hobbies, work, and relationships might be feeling the strain. Despite your best efforts to feel better, you feel more trapped, exhausted, and alone.

Safe enough to create change that may be desired or needed. My style is direct, compassionate, and caring. When appropriate, I use humor, transparency, and my own quirky personality to help create a safe environment and vulnerability. It is the balance of being client-centered (meeting clients where they’re at) and encouraging change (which sometimes includes calling out BS or respectfully challenging when needed). Im currently offering in-person and telehealth.

I completed a year-long residency in ACT, Mindfulness, and DBT as well as additional trainings in Trauma-Focused ACT, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and EMDR.
Being human is pretty hard; acknowledging vulnerability is even harder. Efforts to avoid or get rid of all the "uncomfortable" in life can negatively impact our health & make us feel stuck, anxious or angry & more like autopiloted, reactive "human doings" than connected, responsive human beings. If you've repeatedly hit the rewind button more than once, heard "I told you that last week," or said "I don't have time...," you know what I mean. We will work together to help you curiously explore & shift your relationship with the "uncomfortable," live in the present, & create a rich, meaningful life guided by what you value most deeply.

Since practicing for 22+ years, I am trained in many best practice modalities: IFS, EMDR, DBT, ACT, EFT, Gottman Method, Sex therapy, Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy & others.
I’m glad you’re here. Thank you for listening to the parts of you in conflict/pain and seeking out resources for help. Please remember that growth and healing is not about fixing what is “wrong” with you because you are not broken. Instead of fixing, our time together will be an exploration of all parts of you; one of curiosity and compassion, designed to unearth and liberate the wisdom that already exists inside of you. Going to therapy doesn’t mean that you can’t handle life challenges. Rather, it’s a gift that you give yourself to stay mentally and emotionally fit.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.
What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.
Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.
How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
