Whole Hearts Counseling provides compassionate and strength-based therapy to support you in living life wholeheartedly. Many of my clients have been very diligent in their healing process and have explored a wide array of services from yoga to acupuncture and everything between! Though they have experienced some sense of “better”, they do not feel entirely whole or fully settled in their bodies. With compassion and humor (Yes, humor! We are allowed to have fun on this journey of healing), we begin to explore with curiosity what may be blocking the ability for you to shift into greater connection with self and others.

Trauma tells the story of what happened to us, and the story of how we have survived. The lessons it imparts may have served us very well when we first learned them, but at some point, we realize that the story is holding us back from living in the here and now. As Bessel van der Kolk states so eloquently, “Neuroscience research shows that the only way we can change the way we feel is by becoming aware of our inner experience and learning to befriend what is going inside ourselves. We begin to see the change we want to see when we go within with an attitude of curiosity rather than judgment."

Has life become so challenging that you ask yourself, “Will it ever get easier?” As we journey down the road of life, we will run into bumps, make wrong turns, and even experience wrecks. When that happens, we often need support to help us get back to being our happiest, healthiest selves. Whether facing the stress of life-cycle transitions (e.g., beginning a new career, moving to a new city), experiencing a loss of “spark” in your relationship, noticing breakdowns in communication with others, or navigating the psychological and biological impact of chronic illness, I am here to help you move forward with clarity and compassion.

My clients are thoughtful people who have been carrying more than most realize. On the outside they may appear steady, but internally feel overwhelmed, exhausted, or stuck. Many live with Complex PTSD, attachment wounds, sexual or religious trauma, and struggle with rumination rooted in shame and negative core beliefs. You deserve to feel safe, seen, and truly heard, without judgment. If you’re tired of surviving and ready to understand your patterns, regulate your nervous system, and build secure, connected relationships, you’re not alone. Together, we work to discover new ways living, healing & cultivate greater self-compassion.

Have you spent years feeling like you're "too much," "too sensitive," or like everyone else seems to handle life more easily than you do? Maybe you've recently been diagnosed with ADHD and are realizing that many of the struggles you've blamed on yourself finally have an explanation. Or perhaps you're exhausted by intrusive thoughts, anxiety, or experiences from your past that still seem to affect you today.

Life can be hard and that is part of the reality that comes with being human. But sometimes even our best effort to move past difficulty falls short. And when our stories do not get listened to or honored, it can create a deep sense of aloneness. Therapy is a relationship where we collaborate to listen to you, the client, in order to find solutions within the particularity of your own story. Whether you are dealing with the difficulties of family or other relationships, the demands of work and school, or struggling with personal or faith issues, counseling can be a powerful way to get back on your feet.

Thank you for arriving here safely. If you are ready to schedule your first session, that is great! Acknowledging you are at a “stuck point” and taking action to improve your life takes courage. Just reach out to me - I look forward to getting to know you and working together toward your goals. I am a licensed psychologist, teaching and practicing psychotherapy since 2007. I believe that each of us is striving to become healthier, happier, and more able to live fully, and that our life challenges (or “symptoms”) are expressions of this motivation toward growth. Thus, my therapy is strength-based and individualized to you.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists
How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
