I have decades of experience and training in Play therapy, Art Therapy, Expressive Arts, Mindfulness, Relationship-based, Parent -Child Psychotherapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and other reflective, complementary & alternative modalities.
Hi, I'm Sofia, and I love helping kids, families, and couples reconnect with each other and find the joy in spending time together! I am a Licensed Master Social Worker and have worked with families in the valley for over 18 years. During this time, I've had the opportunity to watch many different family dynamics. When someone asks what makes the difference between "surviving" families and "thriving" families, I say it's the quality of those fundamental relationships. My goal is to help you and your family develop the understanding and habits that allow you to strengthen and foster healthy relationships.

Trauma can leave us feeling lost, anxious, and disconnected from our true selves and from others. Being a new parent can sometimes trigger these feelings. You may be fed up with feeling down, low motivation or low self-esteem - you might not even remember a time things didn’t feel this way. Now, you’re ready for some relief. You’re ready to make some changes so you can feel better, more empowered. You’re ready to let the past stop affecting the present. It does not have to continue the old way, there is hope. If any of this sounds familiar, reach out for a free consultation and let's see if we're a good fit!

I work with adolescents and adults age 15 and up and offer individual, couples, family, and parenting help.
Throughout our life journey we are met with numerous personal, family, and relationship challenges. Finding someone in whom we can trust during our most vulnerable life struggles can be particularly challenging. When we become overwhelmed by adversity we can begin to feel discouraged, alone, and hopeless. Often by the time we reach out for professional help we may have reached a point of despair. Sometimes negative choices we have made, or the abusive behavior of others, has placed us at risk for harm. In our most challenging moments we want someone who is there to listen from a place of compassion and non-judgment.

I have worked in counseling for over twenty years with a focus on helping those with depression, anxiety, substance abuse, low self esteem, history of trauma, childhood abuse and neglect, and parenting /marital/relationship issues.
HEALING AND TRANSFORMATION.... Is an inside job. My treatment philosophy is based on the idea that each client is unique: with unique strengths, experiences and challenges. Each of us has within us what we need to become whole and free. It is the therapist's job to help each client recognize their own magnificence. We work together to identify strategies, tools, and insights to create the freedom and outcomes each client desires.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
