I have decades of experience and training in Play therapy, Art Therapy, Expressive Arts, Mindfulness , Relationship-based, Parent-Child Psychotherapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and other reflective, complementary & alternative modalities.
Hi, I'm Sofia, and I love helping kids, families, and couples reconnect with each other and find the joy in spending time together! I am a Licensed Master Social Worker and have worked with families in the valley for over 18 years. During this time, I've had the opportunity to watch many different family dynamics. When someone asks what makes the difference between "surviving" families and "thriving" families, I say it's the quality of those fundamental relationships. My goal is to help you and your family develop the understanding and habits that allow you to strengthen and foster healthy relationships.

I work from a mindfulness based approach to help you feel more in control of the present moment.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor here to help you overcome the many stressors and life events that seem to impact our lives. I understand it can be difficult and overwhelming to manage on your own. Sometimes all you need is an outside perspective, or help to manage anxieties or depression; and sometimes you know it is rooted deeper from your past. Either way, I can help you overcome the many hurdles life throws at us that often leave us feeling broken. I specialize in helping overcome abuse and/ or trauma; those who need to feel a sense of purpose; and those going through tense, and sometimes toxic, relationships.

I believe that people do not go to therapy to change who they are, but to let go of who they are not. I act as a guide for adult individuals and couples using mindfulness , relational, and cognitive therapies. Together, we identify and change unhealthy survival skills, irrational thoughts, and behavioral patterns that have lead you off course. It is through this process of becoming aware that new and fresh perspectives can be found. This will lead to increased confidence in decision making, communicating and creating healthy and fulfilling relationships with yourself & others.

I use Cognitive Behavioral therapies in addition to EMDR, mindfulness and art.
I Do Not accept insurance. As a trauma trained therapist, I offer a wholistic approach to therapy emphasizing a body, mind, soul and spirit focus. Experts agree that trauma can stay trapped wihin the body causing issues, while negative patterns of thinking and responding can create unhealthy, frustrating, stuck places. EMDR is a proven method which addresses all of these areas together. In addition, I work with clients who express an interest exploring a faith based perspective for healing. Therapy can be a safe place to work together to unwind the stuck places.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
