Men's Issues Therapists in Fountain Hills, AZ

Brian Bantel
Psychologist, PsyD
Fountain Hills, AZ 85268
I work with children, teens, and adults who feel stuck—especially when the same issues keep coming back despite real effort to change them. This often shows up as anxiety, irritability, behavioral challenges, or ongoing stress in relationships or at home. I have particular experience working with men navigating stress, anger, and relationship challenges, while working with people of all backgrounds. Many people I see have tried to handle things on their own or in prior therapy, but the patterns haven’t changed. We focus on identifying what’s maintaining the problem and making practical changes that actually carry into daily life.

The people I usually work with are individuals and couples who are facing important life or relationship challenges and have tried the typical strategies for improvement or making changes. I work best with those who want to take an honest and thorough look at his / her / their functioning and set in motion pragmatic steps toward sustaining a genuinely better life. While conflict and various forms of emotionality are a normal part of life, when these experiences negatively affect one's capacity to have a successful, enjoyable or fulfilling life, it is important to consider other avenues of support.

I work with couples who care deeply about their relationship but feel stuck in painful patterns. Many come in because their sexual connection has become tense, avoidant, or pressured. Others find themselves having the same arguments, feeling misunderstood, or drifting emotionally apart. In therapy, we slow these moments down and look at the emotional cycle underneath them. When couples begin to understand the pattern they are caught in, new ways of responding—and reconnecting—start to emerge.

My ideal client is the one who has been imprisoned by their own mind and is seeking someone to liberate them. I serve First Responders, Veterans, Parents, and Business Professionals. I will assist with the jailbreak, but I also know a person who does the actual work. His name is Jesus. I often describe faith integration like a “volume setting.” You decide how much or how little you want Scripture, prayer, and the Holy Spirit to be an explicit part of our sessions. Whether you are still on “milk” or ready for “solid food” in your walk, I will respect your pace and your process.

Life often presents us with situations that can leave us feeling overwhelmed and unsure about how to move through them. Whether it's a loss of a loved one, transitions that cause us to rethink who we are and what we want, or events in which we've been harmed or mistreated - sometimes we all just need a space to explore our thoughts and feelings so that we can gain the confidence to move forward.

That nagging feeling that you’re missing the mark. It’s so common for Christians. It may be something concrete - some sin or addiction, or an anger problem, or a lack of trust. Or it might be more vague - like a feeling that there’s something else you should be doing, something you’re really missing. You feel like you’re letting God down, letting your family down, not being a good enough Christian. This is a heavy burden, and it takes a toll on how you see yourself. You might say, "I've got to figure this out!" Or "I just need to pray more." You might get angry at yourself, or angry at God: "Why have you abandoned me?"

So, you're looking to start therapy? You've probably held it all together for a long time, and finally reached a breaking point. Maybe you're struggling to perform at work, your relationships are really tense, friendships feel empty and shallow, or you're not able to enjoy the things you used to. It’s time to deal with that. You don't have to be miserable, and you don't have to keep hitting dead-ends trying to get what you want. Therapy can help you figure out what's not working, and learn what actually does work. You can have fulfilling relationships and a sense of meaning and purpose, you just have to be willing to show up.

I also focus on helping with men's issues as well.
Life truly is a wonderful gift, yet it often comes with pain and hardship. Sometimes more than we can bear. First, let me acknowledge the depths of your suffering and the courage it takes to seek support. If you're ready to finally move forward, it would be my privilege to join you on your path toward healing and resilience. I work with Christian men and women, to help them find the root cause of their problems so that together we can cultivate the flourishing person they were created to be. Together, we’ll work towards healing at your own pace in a nonjudgemental environment that is person-centered, and laughter is always welcome.

Men's Issues Therapists
Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
