Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists in Cave Creek, AZ
My clients achieve practical, reliable tools to overcome anxiety and depression. Many are mothers who value my deep understanding of their unique challenges—shaped by my experience raising a large family. Others come to process the lasting impact of trauma or loss, work through their pain, and rediscover a sense of joy. Having lost both of my parents within four months, I understand the profound cost of love and the depth of grief that follows. This experience has also led me to offer home visits for clients with limited mobility. I’m especially passionate about helping people build strong self-esteem and meaningful life stories.

My approach to therapy is integrative and includes the mental, physical, spiritual, energetic and emotional components of healing. I am eclectic and use a variety of counseling techniques and bodywork modalities to match the client's needs and situation. My ideal client is one who has used traditional talk therapy and is 'stuck' in the loop of the mind and wishes to heal, change, grow or resolve and move on with life. Most conditions are improved by my approach, especially with those who are willing. I see couples for relationship counseling using a you/me/us approach. It works!

In therapy we learn to address problems we've been avoiding because they cause us pain or discomfort. For many, avoiding problems has become a problem in itself. You may experience issues with personal productivity, mood, traumatic memories, substance use, or social anxiety. These concerns can be distressing, but they are all manageable with the right skills. A great therapist, Carl Rogers, said “The curious paradox is that when I accept myself, just as I am, then I can change.” Therapy can help you learn skills to get this process of self-acceptance and positive change started.

As a psychologist, I find it most important to create a safe and nonjudgmental environment, where children, adolescents and adults feel comfortable and understood.
I often work closely with parents and children, teaching "tools" that help families function better. These include respectful communication, anger management, and how to deal with excess anxiety or depression. I believe the past affects our present, and our thoughts affect our feelings and actions. I provide the skills that allow clients of any age to confidently move forward to a happier, healthier place.

Feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected? You’re not alone. Many of the struggles we face—anxiety, relationship conflict, low self-esteem—are rooted in earlier relational wounds that continue to shape how we see ourselves and others.
In therapy, we’ll work together to understand the patterns keeping you stuck and begin healing the relationship you have with yourself. As that relationship strengthens, clients often experience more confidence, clearer boundaries, and more secure, fulfilling connections with others.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists
How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.
When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.
What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.
Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
