Embracing imperfection accepting the flaws and loving yourself is the essence of our growth as human beings as we strive to live the life we are meant to live. Mindfulness is the human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. Mindfulness is a quality that every human possesses and is able to access. However with life sometimes accessing mindfulness is a challenge and the skill is embracing imperfection in order to access those moments of where we are present.

What constitutes a traumatic event is a very personal experience. Often it isn’t until you are in therapy that you discover the full implications and impact on the quality of your life. The footprint of trauma can show itself as difficulty at work, unhealthy relationship patterns, anxiety, depression, or a lack of sleep. It can also be the total and complete interruption of your life. What you may think is anxiety or depression could be early trauma or developmental trauma. It can also be complex trauma created after multiple events and experiences. It is never what's wrong with you but what's happened to you!

Seeking support isn’t always easy—it can feel overwhelming, vulnerable, or even anxiety-inducing. But you don’t have to navigate it alone. One of the most powerful aspects of therapy is the relationship we build together. When there is trust, honesty, and a sense of unconditional support, real healing and transformation can begin. As a strengths-based clinician, I take a client-centered approach and tailor therapy to meet your unique needs. I draw from a variety of evidence-based practices & believe in working collaboratively with you—honoring your lived experience while offering tools, guidance, & support along the way.

It has been a privilege to work with a wide range of individuals, couples, families, and groups, including children, teens, and adults. When conceptualizing collaboratively with a client, I want to work towards identifying the core, underlying issue. Symptom management is important, but in conjunction with this, we will strive to find the roots of the presenting problem. In this way, we can empower you to be autonomous, empowered, and emboldened.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
