What are you looking for in a therapist? A supportive, trusted voice? An empathetic ear? A sense of humor? Someone who's therapy space creates both safety...and confidence? I strive to bring all of the above to my clientele. I'm a Marriage and Family Therapist, with a family of my own. As I bring my practical experience of marriage (and raising kids) to my practice, I am continually inspired by the courage and open-heartedness of my clients; as we set out, co-conspiring toward change and healing. My philosophy is counseling is simple but powerful. I help people make sense of their feelings so that they no longer have to have a disconnection between what they think and how they feel. I work specifically to help you make sense of your feelings by teaching you how to feel so that you can find some emotional peace. The most painful thing is when you feel stuck, powerless, and can't make sense of your situation.

As a psychotherapist, I love what I do. I am most passionate about empowering people to tap into their own innate and natural ability to heal and grow. My treatment philosophy is nonjudgmental, strength-based, and trauma informed. My therapeutic style is to help individuals find their inner gifts and challenge them in a compassionate and direct way. Every individual has their own personal journey that is unique to them all that is needed is a foundation of trust, respect, and equality for clients to heal. I believe as a helping professional it is an honor and a privilege to be a part of that path to wellness.

NOTE: (I work exclusively with adult females). Trauma is part of life. The lasting pain of sexual or physical abuse is obvious, but the subtlety of an emotionally neglectful or spiritually abusive upbringing often has similar outcomes of self-blaming and deep shame. It's by no mistake that my practice is called Likewise; I've struggled through the healing process, and I still get stuck. But I do the work because I value my option to thrive, and am keenly aware that my decision to do so affects those connected to me. Whether you're seeking help for others' sake or your own (or both) I'd be honored to come alongside and support you.

I will engage your child or adolescent in services that are fit to their unique individual mental health needs. Addressing therapy through a person-centered approach allows our therapeutic journey to focus on the strengths that your child brings to session. We will use those strengths to enhance the areas of growth and change. I firmly believe that therapy is a joint relational effort, that together we can help you identify significant areas of your story that need special attention and together we can begin the process of integrating those experiences in to your life, allowing the soul to BE.

Has your relationship become an angry, sad, or scary place leaving you feeling alone, hurt and discouraged? Are you and your partner feeling lost in conflict cycles you don’t understand and desperately want to change? Many of the couples I work with come to therapy feeling just like you. I understand how much courage it takes to reach out for help and to let another person get inside your relationship, especially when you are feeling so vulnerable. If you are searching for a safe place to explore what's not working in your relationship, and support in creating solutions, I can help.

Hi! I am Timothy R. Foster, MA, LPC in WI & MN. My style of therapy is unique. It is designed to engage the full person and to integrate our past, present, and future experiences into a congruent and comprehensive image of our true selves. Life is difficult. It just is. I work well with clients who like to ask tough questions and are willing to be open with their experiences with me. I will provide a direct and compassionate approach. You will get to know me just as much as I get to know you!

Thanks for stopping by! I am a Brainspotting-trained psychotherapist, and have been in the social work/mental health field for more than a decade. I (maybe like you?) have moved through a life that has not always been kind, easy, or safe. I was fortunate to find counselors who helped me reprocess and heal, and form a healthier, more secure sense of self. Through this personal work I became inspired to become a counselor and support others in similar ways.

Are you finding yourself overwhelmed with anxiety? Do you feel a debilitating sense of loneliness that leaves you drenched in sadness? Are you having difficulty maintaining meaningful interpersonal relationships? Are you afraid of being yourself around others in fear of what they might think? Are you captivated by a deep sense of shame and inadequacy? Your feelings are real, and within the context of your personal story it probably even makes sense why you are feeling some of those difficult feelings.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
