Are you feeling a little “off” lately? Down, anxious or unsure what comes next in life—especially after the last year or so? Perhaps relationships aren’t working out or problematic patterns you want to quit just keep popping up. Maybe you find yourself struggling with old wounds that need care and attention. Or it could be you just don’t feel like yourself and you’re not sure why.

My ideal client is one who is willing to be uncomfortable, as growth and change happen outside of our comfort zone. I enjoy working with clients who are willing to be curious about themselves and want to create a collaborative relationship with their therapist. I place a high value on working to understand where each person has come from, to validate their experiences, and then work next to them toward their goals. Change is difficult and I deeply honor the growing pains that can come with change. Therefore, I also enjoy empowering and supporting clients to find the correct tools that can help foster their wanted growth.

The path to healing is not one-size-fits-all or linear. Regardless of who you are, we're all out here just trying to be human. The decision to seek help is not an easy one, but my calling is to make the process feel safe, approachable, and welcomed. My goal is to be your mirror and witness to your story. I hope to create a collaborative and safe space to address your needs, achieve your goals, and bring peace and contentment to your whole self.

If you are looking to make changes, or to improve certain areas of your life (relationships, self esteem, family), counseling is a great way to get started. I have worked with a variety of people with varying concerns, but feel that I am particularly experienced in working with those who are struggling with depression, anxiety, or trauma, are attempting to improve interpersonal relationships, or identify solutions. I enjoy working with teens, college students, women, and families. I highly value the counseling relationship and feel it is a place of respect, acceptance, and compassion.

Everyone needs a safe place to express their thoughts, feelings, hopes and fears. Sometimes that means seeking out a professional. Someone who can listen, support, and assist in helping to overcome obstacles or reduce emotional pain. This is my ultimate goal for everyone with whom I work. I have been working in the field of counseling for 18 years and have experience working with a wide variety of individuals. Some need help adjusting to a life change. Others have experienced significant trauma or struggle with suicidal thoughts. Mostly, I am here to meet you where you are at and to help you reach your goals.

Everyone needs hope. We despair and turn to alcohol, food, shopping, sex and the infinite screen to fill our void. We think we know what we want: intimacy, confidence, inner peace and a sense of achievement. We want to matter. We are tortured at times by self doubt implanted by past traumas. I offer a secure place to be yourself to unravel your secrets, fears, shame and guilt. I have 26 years post-doctoral clinical experience counseling individuals, couples and families. I view human problems from a social systemic perspective addressing the individual and their social context.

As a therapist as well as a business consultant and coach, I work with individuals, couples, families and organizations. I work from a systemic orientation, which means that problems are embedded in a complex relational system rather than isolated in an individual. I will help you create healthier ways to be in relationship with others, whether it is your family, coworkers, collegues, and/or friends.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
