As a therapist, I use Interpersonal Psychotherapy and attachment-based approaches in my work.
I approach therapy with a nonjudgmental perspective and a curiosity to understand the unique experiences leading clients to therapy. I believe a strong, genuine connection and collaboration between therapist and client can not only be an opportunity to improve coping skills and process through trauma and other difficulties, but also a catalyst to improving access to experiences of joy and contentment in life. I support clients with their therapy goals whether returning or starting for the first time. Therapy is often a brave journey of exploring the parts of ourselves that we might avoid… feeling scared, sad, angry, confused.

I was born and raised in Las Vegas but relocated here with my wife in 2014. I have spent most of my career as a business consultant and enjoy helping others simplify complex issues. After my own struggles, I realized that these skills could easily be transferred to individuals who had challenges in their personal lives. I am drawn to working with others who are overwhelmed by all the demands life places on them.

I believe in healing that gets to the root - the best healing happens when therapy involves compassionate, deep self-reflection and honest, real conversations in a safe environment. I work with clients and their partners and family members to heal from difficult past experiences and current conflicts toward brighter futures, stronger relationships, and a more secure sense of self.

Therapy can be a dynamic experience creating hope and energy. Facing challenges and grieving losses we inevitably face is a powerful step in moving toward a more satisfying present. I view therapy as a collaboration with you to create your transformation and growth. Our past experiences shape our view of ourselves and in turn our potential in the future. I hope to assist you to "re-author" the stories you have about yourself not serving a positive purpose and replace them with new stories, skills and a vision that do.

We all face challenges in life, and sometimes our challenges can make it difficult to know how to move forward. Therapy can provide a space for addressing such challenges, regaining focus, and finding a new or renewed direction to move forward. I have helped clients through anxiety, depression, crisis, grief, multicultural concerns, life transitions, and family conflict. I specialize with LGBTQIA individuals, couples, and families and often work with adolescents and young adults.

I believe that all healing starts with developing a sense of connection and empathy with yourself and others. I support clients 18 to 50 years old who desire building the life they always imagined through understanding their drive for change. Each client I connect with seeks to deepen their understanding of self through feedback, cultivates the ability to ask when they want someone to listen and knows that their trauma is not something to be forgotten but a piece within them to be nurtured for rewiring.

I am accepting new clients and offer Online Counseling via Telehealth. I've provided over 10,000 hours of therapy and like Confucius said, "Choose a job you love, and you will never work a day in your life." I managed LDS Family Services for 13 years and loved directing the 12-step Addiction Recovery Program in Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania. I've been recruited by multiple residential treatment centers, a hospital, a skilled nursing facility, and by an IOP program assessing and treating substance abuse and domestic violence.

Amy helps you to find the insight you need so your story can make sense again. We can all become unsure of how we got to where we are, where we are headed, and even what would make things better. We become emotionally, relationally, and even physically stuck, reacting in ways that are ineffective at best, and often just plain counterproductive. Amy brings to therapy a number of different approaches to assist you in finding personal insight, motivation, and connection. She supports clients in the act of turning to their internal experience as a guide to forming connections, making decisions, moving through difficult experiences.

Have you ever looked at your life and thought, “How did I get here?” Sometimes life feels hard, overwhelming, and chaotic. Maybe you just don’t know where to start or you feel lost. Maybe you’re embarrassed that you can’t handle things on your own or like you don’t know who to ask for help. Perhaps you're going through a rough patch or you're looking to improve your relationships with friends, family, or partner. Or, maybe your child is struggling with anger, sadness, or anxiety.

I believe the story you tell yourself about yourself and your relationships is far more meaningful and descriptive than a diagnosis or other label that may have been placed on you. My goal is to assist you in gaining clarity about that story, who you are and where you are in life – your aspirations, talents, skills, obligations, and needs – so you can move confidently into the future, staying connected to those you love and the things that bring you joy. Don’t be a victim of fear, insecurity, or disappointment – harness your natural abilities, virtues, and powers to be the hero of your life.

Few of us get through this life without experiencing some trauma. Yet we all have the capacity to experience post-traumatic growth with the help of therapist whose role is to remove barriers that prevent us from moving past our past. When clients leave my office they have improved capacity for facing life head-on. Finding the right therapist is about “fit,” which is about feeling affirmed and validated for who you are.

There are things in life that can lead us adrift, where we may feel that something is missing, have dissatisfaction with our life, or feel stuck in a situation that is draining and dysfunctional but do not know the way out. I’ve found the experiences of our developmental years, to often color the way we see the world, and can create patterns that hinder access to our true self, and thus, a full and conscious life. I believe that authenticity, resilience, and self-efficacy are crucial to living a satisfying life, and I want to help you move through the wounds that have kept you from getting there.

I understand the importance of finding a therapist who makes you feel like they actually get you and truly care, and that it's not always easy to open up to someone new. This may be something that you have been thinking about doing for a long time, but for a variety of reasons you have put it off. Whatever has brought you here and whatever your prior experiences with therapy are, I am so excited and honored to get to be a part of this journey with you.

We all experience pain and search for healing. This can be overwhelming to us and we can experience a lack of control or hope for the future. Our relationship with ourselves is often impacted, hurt, and internalized through our unbearable experiences of early life relationships. This can leave us feeling isolated and fearful to engage fully in life and with others. We often create subconscious strategies for managing this pain in search of safety and meaning. As we grow, many of the ways that we learned to cope with what was once unbearable begin to feel burdensome and overwhelming and we find ourselves needing something new.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
