Accepting new clients. Engaging in the honest conversations of therapy and feeling fully seen and fully understood leads to healing. These types of conversations can be rare in everyday life. I strive to foster a therapeutic relationship in which you can be genuine and vulnerable. As a psychologist I value warmth, acceptance, and patience. I bring years of clinical training as well as knowledge of research-based practices to therapy while also recognizing you as the expert of your own experience. With that in mind, I prioritize listening closely and tailoring our sessions to what you want from therapy.

I use a trauma-informed and attachment-based approach.
I deeply enjoy working with adults with ADHD, anxiety, and/or depression, and those who want to gain a deeper understanding of who they are. You may have the experience of feeling disconnected from others or difficulty knowing how you bring value to the world. If you have (or suspect you have) ADHD, you may feel overwhelmed from constantly trying to fit into a box that wasn't made for you. Together, we will explore your struggles, values, history, and strengths to cope with challenges and begin to feel more connected with yourself and those you care about.

You are enough, you are worthy and I already know you are brave because you are here. Healing is possible. You are not meant to heal alone. Together we will create space for you to feel safe and supported, so you can reconnect with your truest self. The real you, the vibrant you, that is still there, alive and well, under any chaos or pain. I have spent 14 years supporting others through their darkest times, through trauma, loss, grief, and struggles with belonging. The path of the human experience can lead to a variety of complicated and sometimes difficult emotions.

I believe in human connection and the healing powers of validation, being heard, at times challenged, and seen. I bring myself to the room with my clients and "go there" with them, healing along the spectrum from learning how to experience the deepest wells, to planning coordinated, intellecutalized courses of action.

I believe that seeking help from a therapist takes strength and courage. When I see clients, it is my goal to compassionately and collaboratively address the issues that are most difficult, and help lead and guide them in their process of resolving concerns. I believe people have incredible abilities, thus one of my primary goals is to help explore, process and improve the manifestations of these strengths. I am passionate about helping people improve individual, couple and family functioning and I believe that a safe, comfortable and confidential environment is important in that process.

If you have hit a wall in your relationships, with your health, or are struggling with past trauma and self worth, it's time to collaborate with a caring provider who can help transform the heaviness that interferes with your sense of purpose and connection. Using your insight into yourself and my insight into psychology and wellness, we will work together to identify the patterns that perpetuate pain and stagnation, shifting you toward healing emotional wounds, and creating powerful strategies for recovery. Serious depression, anxiety, the breakdown of relationships or individual health, call for heart centered attention.

Are you struggling to connect with your true self? Do the beliefs you have about yourself affect your relationships? It can be challenging to embrace your core identity, and unpack the beliefs we hold about ourselves. Together we can learn to identify the ways in which you have protected yourself through relational patterns and coping mechanisms and create space to find who you really are outside of a history that may have left you feeling wounded, or not enough. As your therapist, I strive to create a relationship that provides the security needed to navigate these challenges, enabling you to find safety within yourself and others.

My identity as a person and clinician developed during my time at Randolph-Macon Woman's College where I lived among confident and intelligent women from all over the world. I learned the value of asking questions and began to understand the value of ambiguity in one's search for clarity. I believe there is goodness within us and that we deserve a chance to be our genuine selves in the presence of others. I aim to provide a safe space for self-expression and discovery. Clients are offered a confidential, non-judgmental environment where they are heard and understood.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
