Hello, My name is Liliana and I work at Utah Lakes Neuroscience Mental Health Center, where we take an integrative approach to Mental Health and Trauma Therapy. Do you feel lost, lonely, scared, helpless? Have you had enough BIG reactions to little events that just leave you feeling so heavy and defeated. Does it all begin with an endless pit in your stomach, or your heart racing so fast you think you're going to spin out of control. Can you feel it right now as you read this? Are you wanting for someone to give you answers, understand you, or just listen without judgement, or preconceived ideas of who you are?

Many individuals first come to my office feeling “stuck in the muck”, overwhelmed, burdened, hurt or alone, while others are seeking a witness to their pain and suffering, are in a state of immense life changes, or are experiencing challenges after surviving a traumatic event or a lifetime of traumatic exposure. No problem you are currently experiencing is too big. What is therapy like with me? I meet each individual, couple, or system where they are at, and do so with unconditional positive regard. You are the expert of you; as the therapist, I am here to learn and create a safe space for you to meet your unique therapy goals.

My approach is an affirmative space. I help many navigate the difficult journey of their faith crises and revolutions. This is a very hard time to navigate and the universe is calling us to heal. I have special trainings and certifications with Brainspotting a brain based trauma approach; working with children through play therapy, couples therapy & LGBTQ+ relationships and issues. I also have extensive experience wading through the struggles of stepfamily and blended family issues. You deserve a supportive space to manage life.

Over the past 16+ years of full-time practice, I have developed a strong commitment to helping adults, children and teens heal from anxiety, depression, grief and trauma. Since completing my formal training in 2008, I settled in Utah, where I have worked extensively with adults suffering from trauma, depression, anxiety and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Regarding my work with children and teens, I have worked extensively with conditions like ADHD, Autism, learning problems, self-harm behaviors, and mood disturbance. A family-based treatment approach is very important, as the whole family needs to be involved.

Life is difficult, and none of us are immune from painful events or circumstances. Day-to-day life is far more painful when we are burdened with unresolved trauma, OCD, anxiety, or grief. When facing one or more of these struggles, it can feel like we are at war with our minds and emotions. We start to see ourselves as the problems and our world gets smaller and lonelier over time. This is a scary place that breeds hopelessness, powerlessness, and shame.

The challenges we face as individuals, as a community, and as a society can have a profound impact on the way we view the world, ourselves and others. Exposure to multiple adverse life experiences over time (experienced directly or in anticipation of adverse experiences) can progressively increase symptoms of anxiety, depression, clinical, and sub-clinical PTSD and even impact the state and health of our bodies. Adverse life experiences are often stored in the body and can be coded to our DNA. Somatic forms of therapy such as EMDR and Brainspotting help to adjust this lens by integrating and fully reprocessing adverse experiences.

I help those who are tired of feeling trapped, constantly living a step away from what they really need. If you want to reclaim your peace, rebuild your confidence, or feel like yourself again, reach out. My clients find renewed hope as they face strong feelings in a safe way, uncovering both hidden issues and hidden strengths. Due to low availability, I limit new cases to those with issues where I’ve brought the best results. Trauma survivors (both women and men) and women, specifically, who are dealing with other issues such as anxiety, mood, chronic pain, or the effects of narcissistic abuse.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
