We offer an attachment-based perspective.
Does it seem like you take care of everyone else, but have difficulty taking care of you? Do you wish you felt better about yourself and wish you could create healthier and happier relationships? We are here to help. In 2002, I had a vision of gathering a group of excellent clinicians to be a mental health and family relationship resource for our community. My vision has been realized! I have an excellent team of colleagues at At Wasatch Family Therapy. We will guide you through the therapy process in a comfortable atmosphere that will put you at ease, and help you make the changes you desire. We work with clients as young as 3+.

Are you dealing with anxiety or major life transition? My goal in therapy is to help you work through your feelings, understand the "why" behind your behaviors, and identify specific skills that will lead to the change you seek. I want to help you achieve greater self-mastery and an ability to manage your emotions. At the end of the day I want you to feel confident, whole, and prepared to handle whatever comes your way.

Does being a human feel a little bit exhausting sometimes? Have you ever wondered how your experiences have shaped you? Are you curious if anyone else has similar experiences to you? Have you ever wondered what therapy can do for you? I believe in collaboration and consent and value the importance of the therapeutic relationship. My experiences have shown me that people are capable of and possess the tools to live a healthy and fulfilling life. My goal is to help you unlock and learn to implement those tools and to help you uncover your already existing human potential.

I believe that feeling connected and safe are the first steps toward meaningful change. In my practice, I strive to provide a non-judgmental and supportive environment where individuals can explore things with freedom, develop a deeper understanding and love for themselves and find ways to live their lives in the direction of their chosen values. I enjoy working with teenagers and adults who experience a variety of mental health challenges, including anxiety, trauma, grief, life transitions, chronic shame, and issues related to racial and ethnic identity.

I believe that if someone is willing to be honest with him or herself and is willing to change, then all things are possible. I work hard to help people find their own answers. If I were looking for a therapist, I would want to be sure that the therapist would be a great listener, would be willing to accept my values, and would be able to guide me into solutions for my problems. Those are the qualities I work hard to bring into therapy. Not very many therapists have emphasized men's issues in their practice. I help men understand themselves, and women seeking to understand their partner or other important people in their life.

Most of my clients are high functioning people who are struggling with a specific issue in their lives. Some feel stuck due to depression, anxiety, or relationship issues. Some are dealing with a chronic illness. Some are transgender, have a gay child, or are in a marriage with a spouse whose sexual orientation is different than theirs. Many feel frustration or even hopelessness about negotiating their situation in the context of their cultural or religious upbringing, their marriage, or extended family relationships.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
