I find that an attachment-based, developmental lens is best when working with clients.
I love working with clients (especially children, adolescents, and families!) from diverse backgrounds who are looking to find answers and solve any issues they may be struggling with. I am passionate about my work and believe in radical acceptance of all people. I am an LGBTQ+ affirmative psychologist. As a mother of five children, I understand many of the issues that families face and I strive to be a caring, upfront, and empathic psychologist who helps clients work toward achieving their goals. I also offer psychological testing.

I personally know the value of feeling safe in therapy. Building trust with your therapist is key to embarking on the journey of growth and self-discovery.I prefer to work with people in the long-term, finding that helps us get to the roots of our difficulties. In part, because there is a deeper connection in the therapeutic relationship. Compassion and empathy are core to who I am, and I bring these attributes to each session to develop an authentic connection with you. Whether you want to work on PTSD, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, domestic violence, grief, eating or body image difficulties, I am here to help.

We’ve all experienced varying degrees of pain or trauma in our lives. Sometimes that pain, sadness or fear becomes debilitating and we find it difficult to function. You may know what is causing your distress (loss of job, end of a relationship, family problems) or you might have no idea why you’re struggling. Either way you may be feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, anxious, worried, angry or even confused. Things that have helped you in the past may no longer be working. That’s a good sign that you need some new coping skills and improved insight.

You are capable and it's easy to create superhuman expectations for yourself. But when you are a helper who is supposed to have it all together all of the time, you can become exhausted, burned out, depressed, isolated, numb, anxious, overwhelmed, reactive, resentful, and traumatized. Your sleep, job performance, and relationships can suffer. You might even experience compassion fatigue as you operate more and more in survival mode. But you are not alone. And you’re in the right place.

We all need support, life brings planed and unexpected change, transitions and requited growth. My clients may feel the pressure of perfectionism, feeling not-good-enough or second guessing themselves, feeling stuck in life. They may have physical or emotional pain and a big stress overload. Often feeling pulled in too many directions, with too many responsibilities, caring for too many projects or people. They can feel lost or adrift, that life is not progressing or as meaningful or happy as they had hoped. Grief & loss build up & worry about the ability to change can immobilize so they often feel stuck & afraid in life.

I consider the therapy process a courageous and hallowed experience. It is not easy to share pain, life struggles, and vulnerability with another person. I try to make that process as safe as possible while also facilitating a brave space where one can courageously face difficulties in healing ways. The framework of my practice is honoring and developing compassion for all diverse lived experiences. Every person has a diverse heritage, background, and identity and I strive to work within that context to aid people in their healing process.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
