I value and celebrate individuals who come all walks of life. I believe there are strengths and perspectives to be found in the life experience we face each day. There are many pieces and parts that make us who we are; our life history, our race, gender, gender expression, age, sexual identities, abilities, religious beliefs, and spiritualities. Pieces that are apart of us, but not always in harmony. I believe as we acknowledge, explore and embrace these conflicts, we can find a new meaning to our suffering, new ways of coping, and a new perspective on life.

Each client who enters my office desires deeper personal connections, less stress and more hope. When tragedy strike, and you find yourself facing depression, anxiety, or dark thoughts, then I'd like you to begin a mental health journey with me. We're all part of the human condition and we have to learn how to keep our brains healthy and heal when needed.

Life is hard, but it is not hopeless. There are many circumstances we would not choose to be part of our lives. These circumstances may even limit our choices. I have learned that it doesn't really matter if these limiting circumstances were brought on by yourself or others, if they were intentional or unintentional consequences of past or present behaviors, or if they are randomly introduced. Regardless, they are absolutely frustrating, painful, and time consuming. I am honored to work with individuals and families who are seeking professional support in these times.

I have both personal and professional experience with and specialize in supporting people going through religious transitions and general life transitions. My passion is to help people cultivate self-compassion and autonomy to face life’s challenges. I strive to make therapy a place where clients feel safe and empowered to make positive changes. I use elements of Attachment Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and person-centered therapy. Because I am person-centered and want to meet people where they are at, I will pull from other modalities if needed.

I understand the complexities of life and relationships and how hard it can be to navigate. It can feel overwhelming and even helpless at times. I approach life and therapy with a wide lens. I like to take a holistic approach to mental health and I understand that our mental, physical and spiritual parts are intertwined. As humans we are made to feel emotions. I don’t view life or therapy as a process of learning to avoid difficult or uncomfortable feelings or a process of perfection. I view it as a process of discovery, acceptance, growth, and understanding.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
